I recently installed a pre-released version of Microsoft Office 2007 (Beta), and could`t load my original version of Microsoft Works 7. Then I removed Office 2007 and still can`t open Microsoft Works. I have tried to repair, reinstall and install, but with no success. What else could I try to do? Please, help.

Uninstall Microsoft Office 2007 Beta and Microsoft Works. Restart the computer. Install Microsoft Works and restart again. That`s the way I did it. I hope it works for you too. Good luck.

working together you'll need your MS Works CD and you can use these steps.

1. Use Start=>Programs=>Accessories=>System Tools and set a System Restore

installing and uninstalling software, backup your files before proceeding.

3. From Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel, uninstall
Microsoft Works.

4. Delete the folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\

5. Restart the PC.

6. Install Works from the CD.

I just wanted to put my two cents worth into this thread. I also had the same problem using MS Office 2007 (Beta 2) and Works 8. But not only did it create a problem with Works, MSO 2007 also created a problem with another program I have installed; Vongo. It gave me .dll errors relating to the location which was the program files/microsoft shared files folder. I tried system restore only to find out that system restore doesn't completely remove MSO 2007. It took several system restores and uninstalls and re-installs to get my computer somewhat back to what it was before installing MSO 2007. I just need to get Works 8 functioning properly again.

Now the problem I'm having is, I can't run Works because of the error message and the Microsoft Works 8 disc was not included with my computer, and it can't be recovered from the application recovery. I am trying to get a replacement disc.

By the way, check out Vongo.com it's a movie download software, that is inexpensive. But beware it is not compatible with MSO 2007 Beta 2. Unless it works if it is installed after MSO 2007. It doesn't work being installed before MSO 2007.

This was the first beta version software I've ever used, I was excited to try the new software. Now, I regret it, it has caused more damage than good, and taken up a lot of my valuable time. I won't recommend anyone to try the Beta version. I'm also a little afraid to try the stable version when it comes out for fear they didn't fix any of these issues.

I have a similar problem. I have just gotten a new HP Pavillion Computer with Works 8.0.

When I go into word processing, it will let me start a new document, but I get a message that the Wizard Templates are not installed - uninstall and reinstall. I get the same message when I try to spell check. I have unistalled and reinstalled and it did not solve my problem.

I also have documents from an older computer that I transferred to the new computer. These were created in Works with Windows 98 and Windows 2000 (maybe Works 7.0?). Anyway - those documents are fine. I can spell check in those and I can open a blank document through an old document and the spell check will work - not sure about Wizard. I have talked to HP, and we uninstalled and reinstalled the files and then they said it was a Microsoft Issue. I have talked to Microsoft who said it would cost me $35 to do anything on the phone and that it was probably a HP issue b/c it is a OEM product.

Any ideas?

I called HP and they said I have to purchase the Microsoft Works 8 disc because they didn't package with my computer. I think I can get a full non-oem version for about $40.00. So, I guess that's not too bad of a price, but I'm still not happy with what MSO 2007 Beta 2 did to my computer. I'm not happy that HP doesn't provide discs to re-install the software originally installed on the computer. They have some software recovery thing they put on all their computers and it just so happens that Works 8 isn't in the list. So, there is no way to re-install with out purchasing a disc.

I was wondering if a registry cleaner would solve the error message I'm getting? Does anyone know?

If a registry cleaner worked then I wouldn't have to uninstall and reinstall Works 8.

I am going to try the System Restore method suggested here to deal with my own experience of this bug on my new Compaq Presario after downloading Office 2007 beta. Plan B (for which I cannot vouch) involves using cleanup utilities if uninstall does not get rid of all of the [contaminated] remnants of Works. That discussion is at

Hopefully, by running System Restore, I can get a clean Works reinstallation without having to attempt using cleanup utilities, which looks a little scary.

Lesson: NEVER install a beta ( at least one of something as radical as this latest re-do of Office) on a computer in actual home or office use! Betas ought to be for geeking around in an environment where there is nothing that can be damaged that one wants to keep intact. In a world where we are hit with all sorts of unlikely caveats we ignore daily, it is good to know that this one should be heeded: a beta may, as in this case, not be a harmless preview.

By the way, apart from the damage it did to my Works program, what I have seen of Office 2007 in the brief time I maddenly tried to work with it tells me that the folks at MicroSoft forgot Rule 1: If it ain't broke... They've got to re-work the basic user interface of Office 2007 considerably before I would be interested in replacing the very friendly Office 97- Office 2003 user interface.

SUCCESS! EUREKA!

The first suggestion I tried (see my earlier post) did not work for me. But the one that I referred to from MS Communities involving the use of MS clean-up utilities did the trick. Below is the procedure that I followed. Four clarifications or revisions of what follows: (1) I never got the "Setup is unable to remove earlier version" message that is in the title to this procedure and in item #3, though. I simply proceeded as if I had; (2) if Works was preinstalled on your computer and you do not have a restoration CD (but rather a recovery partition on your hard drive), you will not be able to extract the needed Wks8xp file for correcting this problem in an XP envirionment, and, contrary to the indication in the written procedure, is not available on the MS web site, at least not that I could find, so you'll have to borrow the Works 8 disk from someone, where you will find it in the PSS subfolder; (3) when you run the Windows Installer cleanup tool, per item #5, select (highlight) Works 8.xxx in the list, then click "remove" (4) reboot at the end using same clean-boot procedue that you use at the beginning, only the second time, chose "normal start" rather than" the "clean-boot" option.

Yay!!! My Works 8 is fixed, and I didn't have to do that lengthy set of instructions posted earlier. I uninstalled, deleted the works 8 folder and reinstalled. Worked like a charm!
