System Tray doesn't load... [RESOLVED]

Hi all. When I start my computer and log in, on occasion, only one or two of my system tray options will come up. If I logoff, then sign on again, they will all appear. Also, the computer will not shut down on occasion and needs to be hard-booted.

I checked my main drive "C" for fragmentation today and noticed that while the drive doesn't need to be de-fragged, there are quite a few fragmented files named "System Volume Information\_restore{ }

There is a line of code in between the "{ }" and most of the files end with an .exe or . dll extension. I'm a little worried that this isn't simply Windows gumming itself up. Also, I haven't created a restore point in about 3 or 4 months (maybe longer) so unless Windows does that by itself, I don't know why there would be Restore files fragmented. I'm worried it's a virus that's gotten into my Restore function.

Hi There

I am UKBiker and I will be helping you here with this log.

Dont worry about the system restore points, XP creates them automatically and some fragmentation there is nothing to worry about. We will clean things up a bit and see if we cant get your system running a bit better. Also I dont see anything in your log to indicate any infection, but we will run an online scan just to make sure.

Please print these instructions out for reference as the fix progresses.

The Fix

Step 1

First - Create a New Restore Point

Go - Start>Programmes>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore>Create a New Restore point.

Second - Flush All Previous Points

Go - Start>Programmes>Accessories>System Tools>Disc Cleanup>"More Options" Tab>Remove All But Most Recent Point.

Step 2

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step 3

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer, NOT Firefox etc.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report here along with any problems you encountered.

I have a quick question before I post the scan results: Can I kill this process with HJT?

Hi There

The entry you refer to iant a process, that section of a HJT log referes to ActiveX Objects otherwise known as Downloaded Program Files.

ActiveX objects are programs that are downloaded from web sites and are stored on your computer. These objects are stored in C:\windows\Downloaded Program Files. They are also referenced in the registry by their CLSID which is the long string of numbers between the curly braces.

If you want to delete it via HJT, then do the following.



Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Exit HiJackThis.

That should take care of it for you.

Apart from that, your log and scans are clean. Are you having any other problems?

Thanks for the reply. I stopped that control as well as the Kaspersky and the Panda ones. I'm not having any other issues, so it seems as though Windows might just be getting a bit gummy after almost 2 years of use. Thanks for all your help!

Just a general clean up now and we are done

Now you have to clean out your temporary files and flush your restore points:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
Flush System Restore.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

4. Finally Defragment your hard Drive.


So now that your PC is clean, how do you keep it that way?

The single most important measure is this. Keep your copy of XP fully up to date after that,

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer alternatives available. ConsiderFirefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
