I am running Windows XP Home edition. I no longer have the Windows Defender icon in the system tray. It use to be there but I can not remember the last time I saw it. The Task Manager shows MSASC.EXE and MsMpEng.EXE running. I have no idea when it was last updated (I have auto update turned on) or if it is even working. Any Ideas?

Defender is different to MS anti spyware in that you should only see it if you want to, (start, all programmes, windows defender), or if there is a problem such as it not being updated, (castle icon with yellow mark in taskbar)

Microsoft Update includes defender updates
