Hello! My computer is carrying the Sony RK Infection that is making my computer run inefficiently. I was hoping someone could help me. Below are my Hijack This and Ewido logs. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

Please explain what you mean.... The fact that you can see the entries in the HijackThis log means that the rootkit is dead. If you go further you risk killing your CD player. It is still a legit, but shady, form of Copy Protection.

What do you mean by "if I go further"? I was told by Crustyoldbloke that that was what my computer was infected with. However, there may be more. I'm not sure. It sometimes takes minutes for my Internet Explorer window to appear after I select the IE icon. The same thing happens with iTunes occasionally (even after I uninstall and reinstall the software). I haven't received any pop-up windows lately that would show signs of malware, my computer just seems like it's bogged down. Sorry if I haven't answered your question in this post. I'm not the most technical computer person.

What I mean is that if you see files starting with $sys$ the rootkit is dead. The rootkit is designed is hide all files starting with those characters. If you delete these files, then your DVD/CD drives will disappear.

The files starting with $sys$ are legit, they are part of the copy protection scheme of XCP. And the "Sony Rootkit" was designed to hide the protection scheme.

I'm no malware expert, and I do not play one on TV either, but what I see in your logs is a whole bunch of programs running that don't really need to be. You say your computer is not running efficiently, but from the looks of that HJT log, it's doing a lot more than you think. You can uninstall some of those toolbars, and stop extra processes from loading by using Mike Flynn's StartUp CPL . After you download and install it, you will have an extra tab in your control panel called "Start Up" and you can select what you want to run at boot, or not. You can always change it back. Leave anything named "Symantec" ALONE. Your unneeded programs can be uninstalled via the Add/Remove in the Control Panel, and many programs can be "shut off" within themselves- meaning they don't begin to run until you click the icon and bring them to life.

The following things are your printer/scanner and can be turned off. When you send a print command, they will come on automatically:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPDJ Taskbar Utility] C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb05.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHmon04] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hphmon04.exe

This is also something that will turn on when you ask for it- doesn't need to be ready and waiting:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD04] "C:\Program Files\HP Photosmart 11\hphinstall\UniPatch\hphupd04.exe"

These things are optional, I would shut them down and see if there is any difference.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe" /startup
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Google Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Google\Google Updater\GoogleUpdater.exe

How do you connect to the Internet? If you are on dial up or a slow connection, and all these other "updaters" are trying to call home, there will be a lag when you click the IE icon. If you are still experiencing sluggish performance after pruning and weeding, post in the XP section, and we can run you through some basic diagnostics.

Hope this helps.
