Hello

I think that I may have a worm, whenever I’m searching in AltaVista or Google when selecting a new page I often get re-directed to the yahoo website.

I have followed all of the appropriate steps in the sticky and after doing all of the scans I only managed to find 5 tracking cookies.

I have looked on the net for possible solutions but to no avail.

1. To begin let's disable some of your protection since they may interfere with the fixes we have to make. You may re-enable them once your computer is clean again; I will let you know.

> Trojan Hunter: go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red. Right click it and select settings. Uncheck Load at startup and Enabled.

> Teatimer: * Run Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and select Advanced Mode;
* On the left hand side choose Tools > Resident;
* Uncheck Resident Teatimer and click Ok (close Spybot).
2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

3. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

4. You're using an outdated version of Java. Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it:
Select it and click Remove.
Then Download and install the newest version from here:http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Please post a fresh HijackThis log for review.

It seems to be fixed after I followed your instructions.

Any other tips on what I should remove and anything in general I could do to improve my system, or some miracle system improvement "Secret" that I know all you computer guru's hide such as if you press f1 hold ctrl wait 3 seconds then press end and type power improvement you can actually make your system run 300% better RELEASE YOUR SECRETS!!!!! Much appreciated.

Still some work to do though.

1. Disable Teatimer again.

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entry:

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

In order to prevent future infections follow these recommendations:

a. Visit Windows Update on a regular basis to stay current with critical updates.

b. Use a Firewall. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. There are several good but for free programmes available like:

Sygate
Kerio
Zone alarm

c. You also have Ewido installed. Disable Ewido guard and use it only for ad-hoc scans!

d. Install and run the following free programs:

* Ad-Aware SE

* Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found
here! Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

* SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here!

* SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here!

* IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Keep all these programs (including your anti-virus) up-to-date and run them regularly.
If you do not update regularly they will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Hi The Bleecher, :whistling:

1. Disable Teatimer again please.

> Run Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and select Advanced Mode;
> On the left hand side choose Tools > Resident;
> Uncheck Resident Teatimer and click Ok (close Spybot).

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0004-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

You may remember we fixed this entry before and it was gone; now it's back so let's see if there is still something wrong.

3. Do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
- Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

4. You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8). Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it:
Select it and click Remove.
Then Download and install the newest version from here:
