havin trouble deleting password_stealer from desktop [RESOLVED]

my girlfriend installed some program a free Password stealer program that she knows nothin about. Well she knew i was catchin on so she tried deleting it, but if i type password stealer in search options it comes up on desktop only,(and hidden) i think she got rid of everything, except this thing on desktop, as it has no file size, but when i try to delete a pop up comes on and says another person or program is using it, cannot delete. I have been through hjt logs at tech support and was found clean also tried combo fix, kasperky, panda and even system restore but system restore wouldnt work? Anyway to get this deleted? I would feel much more safe? thanks for your time :whistling:

okay, and thank you for the reply matt. Please keep in mind that i may have deleted it all but the only thing i can find is an icon on desktop; Password_steler. And it only shows up if i "show hidden files" in folder options. Do i need to show hidden files for hjt log, so hjt can see/find Password_stealer icon on my desktop? Nothing really shows up in your HJT log. Have you tried deleting the file from safe mode?

yes but it said that this program is being used by another program or person, and that the deletion was not complete.

grassi, that's fine. We'll get rid of it. Please do the following:

download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
    IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

okay i folowed directions only after i hit "apply all actions" then clicked reports tab the box on left was empty and a message read there are no reports to be shown? something close to that anyway. It did find 2 medium threats/infections. But to save log or any other of those options in lower left were not an option.(couldnt be highlighted)? Also i have used this not too long ago not sure when. So i wonder if the 30 day free trial was still good, or if i even used that version? But i did follow all directions?

No problem. Try this one.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file." hhhmmmm what a little pain in the butt. lol. thank you matt for all your time, in helping me figure out how to delete this program. Wonder what is keeping it from being deleted?

Alright. Do you know the path of the file? It will be something like C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Desktop\<file name>

If so, follow these instructions:

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    <insert file path here>
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

The only path i find ends with desktop, this includes doing a search, and also checking properties when right clicking on desktop icon(password_stealer)? Do you still want me to proceed with your instructions?

That's right. After desktop, you simply add the file name which is password_stealer.exe or whatever the extension is. Think you got it?
