the key with the windows logo on it is often referred to as the winkey. It's located between the ctrl key and alt

Thanks Steve,

I disabled from Startup MSN, Quicktime, iTunes, Office and a couple of others which has improved things slightly, are there any more from the above list that could also be disabled? I've disabled through 'msconfig' so there NOT deleted.

Many thanks :whistling:

If you're in the start up tab in msconfig you can click disable all. put ticks back in to the items that are needed (firewall, antivurus, anti-malware only) and then clcik apply. it'll ask you to reboot. say yes. when restarted you'll see the system configuration utility. click the check box on this and say ok.

Let me know how that goes

Hi exparisstevie,

Weekend again :-)

Ok I disabled all but the AVG antivirus startups, does seem to startup quicker and don't realy see what's missing, so I can only deduce that most of those entries are not realy required. However, I won't delete anything at this stage. I have also installed Startup Monitor and Startup Control Panel so should be able to keep an eye on whats going on as it happens. Tried a few of the usual programmes, IE, excel etc, all seem to work ok. Still don't know what realy slows it up, I guess it must be a process of elimination.

Thanks

Don't disable avg as it is your antivirus and needs to be up to date or you will just catch a malware infection
.
Go back to msconfig, startups. Keeping AVG and bitdefender, disable the rest but make a note of what happens, certainly there are many that don't need to start up by themselves just because you have turned on the comp. Also, their are some other things that might help, step 1 is not needed in this case since there is nothing wrong with your comp but the rest might help speed things up a bit.

Time to use your "runbox" to clean your computer,
(all these steps are done with the run box then)

Run Box
find and press the keys; the winkey button and the R botton together(up pops the runbox)
(all these steps can be simply done by typing commands in the run box then)

Step1 deleting the prefetch files
type, or cut/paste this to runbox: prefetch
press: enter
(the prefetch folder opens)
press: Ctrl botton with the A botton(select all is the same)
press: shift + delete botton(deletes with prompt)

Step2 disc clean up
type or cut/paste this to runbox: cleanmgr.exe
choose drive(normally C: but comps differ)
press: enter(this process can take a long time)

Step3 disc defragmenter
type or cut/paste this to runbox: dfrg.msc
press enter(this process can take a long time)

Step4 checkdisk
type, or cut/paste this to runbox: chkdsk /f /r
press: enter( black window appears)
press: Y button
press: enter
reboot the computer(this process is the longest, worse the screen may be lost before hours later the computer arrives at the welcome screen)

Step5 download: clean up.
cleanup
http://www.stevengou...anup/ysspec.htm
run: cleanup

Step6 Start ups
(Important!!! If you are now giving a hjt log to be seen by the malware removal teem here, do not do step6 yet)
type, or cut/paste this to runbox: msconfig
press: enter
mousemove to: start ups
keep; antivirus related and wanted entries
google: unknown entries
disable: ones you know are unneeded.

Good, although this has taken you a long time, I think your computer will thank you for it.

Oh, and one could always think of adding more ram too.

Lets try and optimize your system. Can you do the following for me please:

Download and install tune up 2006 trial which you'll find here - http://www.tune-up.com/

Once installed. Disconnect from the internet. and close all other windows.

Run Tune Up Disc Clean Up

Run Tune Up Registry Clean Up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, which will take a few minutes and need a reboot. You should disable the antivirus programme to run this

Check the anti virus is running after the reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor. Follow advice given

-----------------

This program is a very comprehensive system optimizer and is able to locate and repair many issues in your sytem registry.

******* CANNOT BE STRESSED ENOUGH - UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, REGISTRY REPAIR SOFTWARE/TOOLS SHOULD ONLY BE USED BY THOSE COMFORTABLE EDITING THEIR REGISTRY THROUGH THE REGEDIT HEIRARCHY. IN OTHER WORDS - DO NOT TOUCH YOUR REGISTRY EVEN WITH A FIX PROGRAM UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING ******

This particular program is trusted by this site. It DOES NOT fix unnecessary "fix" phantom issues and is NOT trying to illicit payment from you for these "fixes" - it will highlight issues and then repair them. You should follow the advise it gives.

I have this software on my own pc. It gives you full functionality even from the trial version.

Speak soon
