I am looking for a decent antivirus that uses the least amount of system resources possible. I have already dismissed Norton and McAfee, and I was wondering about Avast, AVG, or maybe some others.

Hi. I hear very good things about Avast, however, I use AVG myself on two computers, and I never have trouble. They take much less resources than most others.
