:whistling: A geeks to go member advised me to use virtual pc to install Windows 95 from Windows xp.
Virtual pc seemed to work but it only gets as far as:
__________________________________________________

Please wait while Setup initializes.
Scanning system registry...
Cannot create a temporary directory.
If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive,
you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up Windows.

A:\>

I keep tring to install, but it only gets as far as this.
Do I have to change my virtual hard drive to Fat 32?, and if so how do i do this.

(I've also tried installing windows 98, but it does the same thing!)

Thanks for your time

Need to use FDisk first, then format the "hard drive" (from within Virtual PC, obviously), then you can use Windows setup as per normal.

I ran FDisk. it seemed to work. but i don't know how to use the cd instead of the floppy disk to install windows 95.

when I use the startup floppy disk to start windows setup, it just says:

Insert 'disk 1' .

The only problem is 'disk 1' dosn't seem to work!?!!

is there any way i can get my computer to use the cd instead????

Download a new one from bootdisk.com.

Windows 95 cannot be installed by booting off of a CD in the same way that Windows 98 can - 95% of computers around at the time Win95 came out could not boot off a CD so had to use a floppy.

That's silly!!!
Why does windows 95 come with an "Installation CD", & why does it have instructions for "Installing Of The CD".!?!!??!

I'll try bootdisk.com

Thanks a bunch :whistling:

I tried downloading the floppy bootdisk.com had.
I think it's just a Boot disk, rather than a setup disk (it didn't work).
there is actually a set of 3 setup disks for win95, the first disk dosn't work, but I'm not sure if the other 2 will.

Do you know were i will be able to download the setup disks?

To install Windows 95 from a CD you needed to boot off a floppy, then change to the CD drive and then run setup from there.

So basically change to drive D and type Setup.

Or alternatively you could install from about 30 floppy disks, which is always fun. :whistling:

I tried setup from the CD. The Manual told me to type "D:\>win95\setup", I also tried D:\>setup wich is also a valid directory, But ms-dos just said it was a "bad command or file name".

I think I'd better try the 30 floppy disks option. :whistling: .
Only problem is I don't know where to download these from.

Do you know where i'd be able to get these from

Thank a lot.

Hey It's alright now.
I unearthed an old old disk that said: "Microsoft windows 95 - CD-Rom boot disk", it must have installed some drivers or something 'cause it started reading the CD drive. (hooray) :whistling: .

Thanks for all your help.
much appreciated,
