Hey i want to either build or buy a superfast non-gaming computer for my brother for under $800. This will have to include everything, OS, Monitor, speakers etc. Is my best bet to go with a Dell Dual core and call it good or can i find and build one that is faster. He will not play any games on it so any cheapo video card will do. Please help me either figure out a computer to buy or help me pick some parts to build it.

With $800 you wont be able to afford an Intel Conroe machine but you should look at the amd am2 x2 or the amd socket 939 amd x2 cpu's.

Dell makes Okay pc's in general but Custom is much better and usually cheaper because you get high quality stuff if you go custom.

Sometimes the Dells prices are generally pretty good on the low or mid end machines but the high end are out of the question for you.. There high end computers are overpriced for shure..

Hey thanks for the reply. I will check out that link. I pieced together a computer at the newegg site with the slowest conroe, which im sure is still fast. I have everything on this list except a monitor which i will need to talk to my bro about. Do i need to add a video card or will the on board video work since my bro plays no games?

I was gonna suggest the lowest conroe at first then I realized that you wont have enough in your budget with a monitor and all high end quality parts.. I was gonna suggest 2gb of ram also in the pc but 1gb is fine..

That case you listed is a cheap case with a small powersupply... Look into a better powersupply like a 400watt truepower minimum on up.. That ecs mobo is kinda a cheap board but its all up to you.

I dont think that mobo is compatible it doesnt look to be a compatible chipset. Cheapest conroe boards ive seen is still a 100 quid.

That mobo actually is supported by core 2 duo but its really a cheap mobo..

Get it if you want but remember its a low end board. A super low end conroe board..

Do i need to get him a video card if he doesnt play any games or will onbaord work? Will this cpu outperform a Dell Dimension with a dual core proc? Thanks.

I still wouldnt use the powersupply in that case for an intel conroe dual core processor. The case is fine if you want to stay cheap but get a truepower power supply from a good manufacturer like antec, thermaltake, ocz, enermax etc.. You want to have plenty of power and a reliable power supply, a cheapo powersupply is not a good idea in any system especially in a dual core system. You have to watch because the powersupplies included with a cheapo case are poor quality and will not push out the output it says it does. That cheap powersupply says 430 watt but I guarantee it doesnt push that probably more like 350watt max..

Those dynapower psu's are really cheap even the 500w psu by itself is only $24 on newegg lol...

I suggest something like this http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817103930 then if your on a tight budget get a cheapo case without a powersupply.


On this system vs a dell it depends what model dell it is.. I can tell you this system will beat a dell in the same price range yes.

Or if you are running off budget and dont want to worry about a pci express video card you can get him this motherboard which is only $95 and has onboard video. He would not have to have a pci express video card since you said he wont be playing any games at all. Integrated video would work for him unless he wants to play the new 3d games.

I usually recommend that people looking for a good deal on computers under $800 take a look at retail store sales. You can find some really good deals on very nice systems if you take the time to shop around. The only drawback is that you have to take the time to remove all of the bloatware that they put on the computer. This is especially true if your not building a gaming computer which most custom sights specialize in.
