Hi Matt,

SwapNut the peer to peer file sharing program? No, I don't use it nor have I ever downloaded it (intentionally).

Also, I don't see the Tclock program listed in the Add/Remove Programs in the Control panel. I see the item listed in the Hijack log, so I went to c:\Program Files but didn't find a dir called Tclock at all. Should I use Hijack This to 'Fix' this entry?

Thanks!!!!

KB,

I had a feeling you didn't know what it was. Better safe than sorry, anyways.

Yes, you can use HijackThis to fix the TClock entry. Also, please follow the previous Killbox instructions substituting the following files in:c:\windows\system32\ts.ico
c:\windows\system32\javaw.exe

Also, how is your system running?

Hi Matt,

So I did the steps you requested and ran a new Panda scan and a HJT scan.

My system seems to be running very well. I don't get any more pop ups advertising various things and the speed seems to have returned to normal.

The Panda Scan still shows a couple of items which I'm wondering why they still exist, but other scans are fine. Also, my McAfee virus scanner hasn't reported the Backdoor-CVT trojan after all this cleaning.

Does this mean my system is clean???

Thanks...

KB,

You can delete C:\Documents and Settings\Keith Braccialini\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url manually. Two of those entries are simply backups from Killbox. You may delete the folder C:\!Killbox if you wish.

Also, please re-download VundoFix using the earlier link provided and follow the instructions again. Post the log from the scan in your next reply.

Your system does appear to be clean from here. The remaining entries in the Panda scan indicate registry entries from files that have been deleted. They are harmless, but at least one of them should go away by running the updated VundoFix. The others I'm not so sure about. We can possibly take some additional steps to get rid of them, but as I said, they aren't causing your system any harm.

Regards,
Matt

Hi Matt,

That's good news! My system is definitely running much better!

I downloaded the new version of the VundoFix, but still it did not find any Vundo infected files. Here's the log:

VundoFix V6.1.4

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.4.2.5

Java version is 1.5.0.6

Scan started at 9:01:21 PM 9/9/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

Do I need to run the VundoFix tool while in SafeMode?

I went ahead and ran another Panda scan and it seems like things have gotten worse since my last scan! I now have more spyware than from my previous scan. I wonder if this indicates that I still have a virus or trojan downloading stuff?

Do you think it'd be worth it to purchase the Panda Scan software for 6 months to clean up the last few traces or is it not worth it?

Here's the Panda scan log:

That's fine. Those items you are seeing in the Panda log are simply tracking cookies on your computer. Running ATF Cleaner or deleting your cookies via Firefox will get rid of that for you but it's not really necessary as they aren't harmful to your system. They mostly just keep track of things you do on those individual sites.

While you do still have a couple of left-over traces left in the system registry, they aren't going to hurt you at all so at this point I'm confident in saying your system is clean.

Before I let you go, let's rehide your system files and set a new Windows Restore Point.

We need to re-hide system files so that you don't accidentally delete something :
  • Open My Computer from the start menu.
  • Click the Tools menu, then select Folder options.
  • Open the View tab at the top.
  • Select the option Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Check the box labeled Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

That's it! Here are some tips for safer surfing in the future

Anti-Virus: Anti-virus software is absolutely critical to keeping your computer safe. If you do not have any, please download either AVG Free or avast! but not both. Running more than one anti-virus program causes conflicts and can actually reduce protection.

Firewall: A firewall is highly recommended in order to keep your computer safe from all kinds of nasties. A free version of ZoneLab's firewall ZoneAlarm is available here.

Anti-Spyware: Anti-spyware programs can be instrumental in preventing malware from infecting your computer in the first place. Periodic scans will keep your computer clean, and a few programs offer real-time malware protection.
  • Spybot Search&Destroy - Offers real-time protection with its Tea-timer software as well as an immunization feature and system scanner
  • Ad-aware SE Personal Edition 1.06 - Scans your system for numerous types of malware. Real-time protection is available via Ad-watch, available in the Professional Edition. Visit Lavasoft for more information.
  • SpywareBlaster - excellent program to prevent spyware from being installed on your computer.
  • SpywareGuard - real-time spyware protection against Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), dialers, etc.
Internet Browsers: the internet browser you use plays a large role in keeping you safe and secure. Check out these two suggestions for an alternative to Internet Explorer:
  • Mozilla Firefox - sleek and secure, Firefox is the fastest browser on the web with a built-in pop-up blocker as well as multiple available extensions.
  • Opera - a powerful, secure browser with a built-in pop-up blocker, E-mail program, RSS support, and IRC chat support.
Other Information: here are a couple of other things to keep in mind.
  • Windows Updates - It's very important to keep your computer updated with the latest security patches and software from Microsoft.
  • Also click here to read Tony Klein's article, "How Did I Get Infected in the First Place?"
Thanks for your patience during the clean-up process! Safe surfing!
