Either using automatic updates or trying to get updates for my OS (which is XP Home, SP 2), I am unable to get updates.

Here is what happens when I try (manually) to get an update:

There are three (I believe) screens involved here.

1. The first says that the OS/MS are checking. (Presumably for what updates are required.)

2. The second gives me a choice an "Express" install, which is recommended, and a "custom" install.

3. The third - labeled "Information" says Files required to Use Microdsoft Updates, are no longer registered or installed on your compute" and then gives me a cguce to "rigister or reinstall" the appropriate files or to read more about the problem. If I check "register or reinstall" I'm recycled back to number one and there is no update.

Any ideas? I'd appreciate some help with this.

Yes, it is checked. Checked automatic updates.

Any other ideas?

The reason for the larger text is that I find text this small difficult to read.

dont update and surf or do any thing other than up dates

When you try to open the Windows Update Web site, you encounter one of the
following problems:

- After the scan for updates is complete, the scan restarts continually.

- After the scan for updates is complete and you select an item to download and
install, the scan starts again from the beginning. This may happen in a
window within a window.

- The scan for updates never completes.

- Internet Explorer may become unresponsive during any of the above conditions.
If you have other Web sites open, they may lock and lose data in transit.

Don't know if the scan is complete - I assume not. There are no downloads shown.

I don't run OE, rather Thunderbird so OE is not running. When it was, the problem was the same.

I've not heard of the "Discussion Bar."

you should try windows update alone with no browers open

try cleaning your computer

with disk cleanup from your system tools

then start ..run..type in prefetch click edit..select all...on any blue file right click then delete

restart

try to do windows update with no other programs or browser open

Several problems on the Windows Update site can be caused by outdated or mismatched site
software. To install updated software for Windows Update on all operating systems other than Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, please follow the instructions below.

Resolution

For Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003:
download our controls from http://v4.windowsupd...icode/iuctl.cab and save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Open".
3. Select all the files listed.
4. Right click on them and click "Extract."
5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."

see if you can install them manually
just want to see if it works this way
