My sound recently stopped working in my notebook. I have a feeling it's hardware but I'm not sure. When I click on Sounds and Audio Devices in control panels, everything is greyed out/ nothing is bold. I can't select anything. Default device (no playback devices), sound recording (no recording devices), no midi playback devices etc. When I click on hardware, and go to sound audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, media control devices etc it says: Location: unknown, Device Status: This device is working properly. I tried installing new sigmatel sound drivers and get the following error message: SEVERE (bar menu) Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again. I've tried restarting but I get the same message when I try to install driver. Any advice on what to do about this? Please email me [email protected]. Thanks so much!

If everything is greyed out it is because the computer does not see the hardware anymore. The hardware has physically failed.

Hi. That's strange that it would give out randomly like that. While it's very possible that it might have just died, I'm usually more curious as to why... Have you made any changes to the system recently?

Hi guys thanks for your input. I'm afraid it probably is a hardware failure. I have not done any major system changes. I'm thinking possibly a connection came loose? I put most of the parts together for my laptop but not the motherboard and I'm a little afraid to try and get into where the motherboard is unless it's not too complicated or not much of a chance to mess anything up etc. One main concern I have no is the extremely annoying and loud system beep I get occasionally throughout the day while using my computer now and I'm unable to mute it. It happens when I exit out of photoshop for example and it will ask me if I want to save the file, also happens when I'm searching for a wireless network and try to connect but it can't. Happens several other occasions as well and it's very jolting because it's so loud and sometimes unexpected. Also just called Asus and found out I'm just out of warranty unfortunately. Any suggestions? Thanks!
