error loading operating system

i have a sony vaio pcg k-15 laptop it wont reboot i usually get a message operating system not found. once i got this message-windows could not start because file is missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll please re-install copy of the above file. also a couple of times it gave an error message and said it was dumping the physcial memory any suggestions

i do not have a windows xp boot cd i have a recovery cd i made myself from software installed on the computer i have tried this but usually get same messages mentioned above or a disk error occured
