i acan not open control panel or my computer or any folders on my desktop. i am running windows xp i had heard that it could have to do with corrupt cpl file but that was for a windows 2000 computer any help would be much appreciated

Likely trojan problem, and really a malware issue. Run into this a couple times in the last month.

Can you run an executable file from your desktop? Download hijackthis and run it. Post a log.
