Run it and click skip if it asks for the CD, if it keeps asking, click cancel

If it kept asking, you have system files missing

Kieth: is it possible to send him an XP image file by e-mail attachment? I have no idea if it is possible or what the size would be. He could then use it set up an inboard version of XP, the burn it to make an install disk. I've never done this before, but it seems logical, as I understand the making of an image file.

What about the System Recovery option?

System recovery will return the PC to day one condition, usually leaving only Windows

If you are in education, ask Microsoft for the educational version

Some colleges arrange this

Having an XP CD will be better long term
