I started this to try to be able to receive updates to XP. After several days of, apparently, good advice in the operating system forum, I was told to post the Hijack This log here. It is below. Beneath that is the Panda file. I've done all the preliminary tests listed on the home page and there is no difference.

A few words on the problem: when I click on update, I am taken to a screen which gives me a choice between "Express" and "Custom" with Express recommended. When I click on that, I, go to - directly, I think, to a screen that asked whether I want to install the undate SOFTWARE, I click yes and am recycled back to the first screen. No update.

David,

Welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Matt and I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

To begin, please uninstall the following applications using the Add or Remove Programs applet located in the Control Panel:MySearch
MyWebSearch
Any variant of these

If you have any questions, do nothing and post them in a reply here. Also, if you see neither of these or anything similar, let me know that as well.

Next, run a scan with HijackThis and place a check next to the following:O16 - DPF: {9DBAFCCF-592F-FFFF-FFFF-00608CEC297C} - http://download.weat...b?rand=20033119
Close all browser windows and click Fix Checked, then close HijackThis.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

When finished, please post a new HijackThis log.

Regards,
Matt

I've done the tasks you asked.

Some notes:

1. Hijack This found "My Web Search" which I can't remember whether I checked and deleted or not.

2. It also found a number of other instances of WeatherBug which I did check and delete.

Cool Web Search did not find anything and returned:

"Cool Web Search not found on this system"

David,

I see that you "fixed" all instances of WeatherBug in your HJT log. I'd ask that you please stick to "fixing" only those specific entries which I list. While it may seem that since they all have the same name they are all malware, this is not necessarily the case. No harm has been done, I just wanted to caution you about checking things. It is possible to do quite a bit of damage to your computer if you misuse HJT.

With that out of the way, run a scan with HJT and place a check next to the following:O2 - BHO: My Web Search Bar BHO - {8EAB99C1-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL
Close all browser windows and click Fix checked and then close HijackThis.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

And with that, I see no more signs of infection in your log. Are you having any issues besides the Windows Update that would indicate to you a malware infection such as overall computer slowdowns or pop-ups? Any unusual behavior? If not, I'm sorry to say that this is likely not a malware issue but a software one.

I'll await your reply before closing the topic.

Regards,
Matt

I must be doing something wrong.

The struture of MyWebSearchWB is MyWebSearchWB -> Bin -> Four folders and files in each.

When I try to copy to files into Killbox, they don't copy.

Have you any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Just copy and paste the following: C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB

It should delete everything that's in that directory along with the directory itself.

This morning, when I followed your directions, Killbox seemed to work.

But, when I checked after the reboot, the directory was still there. Killbox shows that the directory should have been deleted on reboot, but it wasn't.

Any thoughts.

It doesn't appear that anything in the directory has been deleted.

All of the sub-directories are there and there are files within them.

Try deleting the folder manually. If that doesn't work, reboot the computer into SAFE mode and try it that way.

Good. So are there any more signs of infection such as slowdowns or pop-ups? If not, I'm afraid I have to send you back to the software forum to take care of this problem. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I'll wait for your reply before closing the topic.
