You don't have to delete it. Just set Firefox as your default browser.

From Firefox go to Tools -> Options -> General -> Default Browser -> Check Now. That will make Firefox your default browser and IE will stop asking you to make it a default.

Malware is causing these popups. There is no (easy) way to completely remove IE as it is so greatly tied to the OS. Post a HijackThis log in our malware removal forum and a helper will gladly assist you in helping you stop these popups.

I agree with previous suggestion - you shouldn't delete Internet Explorer because it's interwoven with the operating system.
Here's what I did:
Find the 'iexplore.exe' file - the main program, should be in c:\program files\internet explorer\
It's the familiar blue 'e' icon - get yourself a compression utility like WinZip or WinRaR - both downloadable freely from:
www.download.com
Compress the 'iexplore.exe' file - even rename the resultant archive if you like and move to a different folder.
Viola - Internet Explorer will never pester you again - unless you really need it, in which case simply open the archive and uncompress iexplore.exe into it's original folder.
Prepare to be assimilated into the collective ... resistance is futile
Gotta luv Firefox
