Help with Wired connection

Hi, my laptop used to get on the net and then when I did file sharing with my brother's pc my laptop can't get on the net anymore. Did something in file sharing changed my internet connection? And when I put my laptop and my bro's pc together the monitors in the toolbar start flashing and when I connect ethernet cable with modem nothing happens. I was also checking the Wired Home Network OS Setup post and my IP adress starts with 169 I don't know if theres wrong there? Please help ; ;
