Hello. I'm having troubles with some malware: These "Warnings" keep popping up, trying to get me to install several different "Adware removal" programs, and I'm not sure how to get rid of them - I tried AdAware, SpyBot, and Ewido to no avail. Also, I seem to be having some trouble with trojans, as my virus software (AVG) keeps detecting viruses (mostly trojans). No matter how many times I heal they keep popping up. Help?

Here's my HijackThis log:

Dear AlsoAlsoWik, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Restart your computer in normal mode.
Please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Unfortunately I seem to be having an issue with restarting in Safe Mode. Whenever I select the option, the computer seems to shut off for a split second, and then restarts, and asks me how I want to run windows again. I can't seem to start in Safe Mode at all :whistling:

Dear AlsoAlsoWik, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.

Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel,and then Add and Remove Programs. Look for the following installed programs and if they are listed click on each one and then click on the Add/Remove button and follow the prompts for the program to be uninstalled:

Optional programs you can uninstall, through the Add/Remove program:

LimeWire is a Peer to Peer (P2P) file-sharing client. Note - as with all P2P sharing programs they are susceptible to various forms of malware". That is, LimeWire is a program that can be used as a vehicle for downloading spyware on to your computer system.

Uninstall the following program through Add/Remove programs (if they exist):

LimeWire and/or LimeShop

See the following link as a reference - http://p2p.malwarere....com/index.html - You decide.

Restart your computer.
************************************

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Delete the following file/files marked in blue (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\issearch.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\isnotify.exe
ALCMTR.EXE <-- (Do a search for this file and then delete it.)

Delete the following folder/folders marked in blue (if they exist):

Optional folder/folders marked in blue to be deleted (if they exist):

If you uninstalled LimeWire you need to remove the next folder also:

C:\Program Files\LimeWire

Finally, clean out temporary and Temporary Internet files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:
