My friend is running Windows 98 and they had downloaded Internet Explorer 6, and also did a windows update. They were able to access the internet better and didn't have the problem of pages not opening. For some reason the internet exploer would no longer connect to the internet. They have a cable moduem and they were able to determine it was still working. They made a "right click" on internet explorer and all but "general" & "security" were gone. They have not been able to locate the start up disc for the computer. How do they get these properties back for the internet explorer to connect?

Doing the right click on the icon for IE where you would see what the properties are for that icon. On my system it shows "general, security, privacy, content, connections, programs, advanced". On her system it only shows "general & security" now, it used to have all the others.

Have you tried to use System Restore to a restore point to before when the problem started? Before you do be aware it will ipe out everything you installed on the computer including MS updates.

Windows 98 does not include System Restore, therefore such a solution is meaningless.

The original poster could try going to Internet Options in the Control Panel, as this is the same dialog that appears if you right-click on Internet Explorer on the desktop.

I think what your looking for is Internet Properties. They are in the control panel and you can open IE and click on tools at the top to get there also.

I had her go to the control panel and she was able to locate the Internet Options icon she "right clicked" on it and it asked if she wanted to make a shortcut, I had her answer yes and it then said that you couldn't make a shortcut there, but that it could be placed on the desk top which she did. She then tried her internet again and it opened just fine. So we want to thank all of you for your helpful suggestions and solutions. Maybe this can help others. Again thank you, and I will come here whenever I have a problem.
