Hi,
:)
Firstly, I know that everyone here who really kindly helps those with problems with their computers are absolutely amazing, and although it's such a hassle listening to everyone's problems, I want to thank whoever is willing to help me out in advance.

okay, I've read the topic about HijackThis logs and downloading Ad-Aware se.
I think I have Malware, or something. Basically, I get millions of pop-ups, and random Internet Explorer windows close on me. Plus I can't open Task manager and programs that I have on my PC (Windows XP) such as SpyBot. Also, I cannot open certain links on websites. I can't even click on a specific forum on this website. I've managed to write this by clicking 'Post New Topic.'
I know it's kinda horrible, highlighting things in bold, but hopefully it'll be easier to read if more important things are highlighted.

-I have customised the Ad-aware program as stated, but every time I try to run it, it freezes halfway through (usually at 823 objects scanned.) This is happening when programs are not running, and happens when they are.

-I downloaded CWShredder successfully. (I know it's pointless at the moment, but will save time later IF I get Ad-aware to work.)

-I've downloaded TDS-3 and HijackThis

-About Windows Updates. Before things got so bad, I had previously tried to download Updates, but right at the end, when the download was almost complete, it told me the download was unsuccessful and there was nothing I could do but to close the download. okay so I realise without Windows Updates, I'm wasting everyone's time as my PC is extremely vunerable online, but I simply cannot download any of the updates. ;)

If I can get Ad-aware to work, then go through the process of using CWShredder and then installing some updates, I can finally post a HijackThis logfile.

I don't even know how this window has stayed open long enough for me to write all of this. I don't even know if this will post, or if I will even sort this out. God, this is all such a huge pathetic mess. I've tried to explain my problems in a simplified way, and I know this is all a pretty daunting and depressing read, but...please help me. I will appreciate it so much.

(Great, I sound suicidal. I assure you, I'm a pretty light-hearted person, just not when Malware and what have you, try to ruin my computer.) :tazz:

Thank you so so much.

-Sylvia ;)

Please Click here!, and follow the recommendations in the guide.

If you're still having trouble, We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool, Hijack This. Follow the instructions in step five of this guide, and post your log as a new topic in the Hijack This forum. It will get a better response there from the people most qualified to analyze logs.

Most of what Hijack This lists lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Hi,
I'm so sorry if this is the wrong forum to post a HijackThis log in, but I can't access any other forums as the viruses on my computer close the Internet Explorer windows if I click on certain links within websites.
I've read the Guidelines, I've done that. And I can't run Ad-Aware because it freezes halfway and all of my Anti-virus programs don't work, including TDS-3, that I downloaded from the Guidelines.

I've explained all of this in a previous topic (Malware-or something like it) and thank you for the reply I recieved. (Which incidently I had to read by going to Control Panel, clicking on the Profile of the person who replied and reading their Recent Posts. As I can't access the topic I started. I have a feeling that I won't be able to access this topic after I post it either, so if I do get a reply, could you please keep it short so it fits into the recently replied-to topics thingy in your profile? Or better still, I know you're not allowed to PM, but maybe I'll be able to open PMs, so could you try sparing a minute to C&P the reply and sending it in a PM also? Thank you so so much.

The only thing I can do now is to post my HijackThis log. I've been through the whole process once upon a time a year ago, when some wonderful person helped me out. It seems the log shows some strange items that shouldn't be on my computer this time again. Only, this time it's so much worse.

I've downloaded Firefox, do you think it's a good idea to uninstall Internet Explorer and use that instead? How do I uninstall IE? (Stupid question I know...this is driving me insane.)

Thank you so so so much to whoever will respond to this topic as I know you're all people with your own lives and probably have a billion other better things to do than read this topic and try to help someone who probably lives a million miles away from you and all, but this is my only hope.

Thank you.

I have merged your 3 topics to help keep the forum clean. Please do not start multiple threads for the same problem. Use the AddREPLY button at the bottom of the page to reply to this thread.

You have a virus known as Serflog. You can download the symantec removal tool for Serflog Here

Run that removal tool and then reboot and post a new HiJackThis Log in this thread

Good Luck

This is the latest log from Sylvia. The infection that she has is interfering with her ability to correctly use the forums, so I have been helping her via PM.

Oh my god thank you so much!!! I'm so happy I may implode! ;)
Thank you ScHwErV you rock, you so do. I couldn't have done this without you. I'm so grateful.

What do I do now? Should I download some stuff to prevent further infections? I'm using Firefox now by the way, and it's just so excellent, I love it. Everybody should convert.

Here's my latest logfile:

First thing we need to do is get you an antivirus program. Please go to http://www.grisoft.com and download the free version of AVG Antivirus. Update it and be sure you keep it updated.

Now lets go after whats left in your HiJackThis log.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: DLMaxObj Class - {00000000-59D4-4008-9058-080011001200} - C:\WINDOWS\dlmax.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [farmmext] C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AvSer] C:\WINDOWS\System32\svosm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DsmSer] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysup.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rollbk] C:\WINDOWS\msmpatch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [AvSer] C:\WINDOWS\System32\svosm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [DsmSer] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysup.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [rollbk] C:\WINDOWS\msmpatch.exe
O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: {469C7080-8EC8-43A6-AD97-45848113743C} - http://akamai.downlo...thv32_EN_XP.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Then close HiJackThis.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Ebates

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker

Now please re-run Killbox as we talked about in PM just to be sure we got the offending files. We dont want anything popping back up on us.

After that, Reboot.

After you reboot, please post a fresh HiJackThis log and well see how we are doing.

Hmm, okay I'm on dial-up so this download will take forever. It's going to take three hours apprently :tazz:
My Windows Updates don't work for some reason. Well they haven't been working for ages. But I'll try and sort that out in a minute.

I've got Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot and TDS-3 (the latter which I don't even know how to use really but never mind) on my computer at the moment, are those enough to use every so often against viruses, spyware and what have you, or should I get some more or other anti-virus programs?
Also as I've read in the Guidelines, more than one anti-virus program isn't a good thing, so should I not get more?

Multiple antivirus programs will often fight for control of files on your computer and cause major problems. Multiple antispyware programs do not work in this way and are fine.

You shouldnt need tds-3, so you can uninstall that. Once you have avg installed, you should be safe from viruses. AVG is a great AV program.

Spybot and AdAware are a great arsenal for antispyware. Just keep them updated and run them every now and again and you should be good.

After we are sure you have a clean log, I will suggest other programs to help keep you clean in the future. Its best if we make sure you are clean first. The reason we are going after AVG now is that it is just plain not safe to be on the internet nowadays without antivirus.

Hey, I've managed to download AVG, it took forever but it's pretty good. It's doing a scan now, after the first one was cancelled by my PC unexpectedly rebooting. :tazz: (I love that smilie) And it tells me that apparently I have a lot of viruses and Trojan horses. Such as Worm/Sumom.B

Here's my logfile anyways, it seems pretty much better:

It is not uncommon for one virus to bring along friends. Since you have not had adequate virus protection for awhile, you probably do have some other infections. AVG should help clean you up. I dont see any signs of active viruses or anything else really in your HiJackThis log, but there is a little cleanup to be done yet.

Please re-open HiJackThis and click Scan. Check these entries.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE Optional but recommended
O16 - DPF: {469C7080-8EC8-43A6-AD97-45848113743C} - http://akamai.downlo...thv32_EN_XP.cab

Close all windows other than HiJackThis and click fix checked. After that Reboot!

Your computer should now be clean.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

After giving this some consideration, please reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log so I can be sure everything is good to go.

Good Luck

Thanks so much, I'll do that when my AVG scan is done. And thanks for the list of tools and utilities.

okay, I've done everything you asked me to do, and AVG has removed those horrible viruses from my computer. I take it the logfile will be fine now?

I think it's all over...whew! ;)
Thank you so much for your help. What can I say? I wouldn't have been able to do any of this without you. I've been really lucky to have recieved your quick and efficient help even when things just weren't going right at all and you had to find many ways to solve the problems, all through PM's as well- and I know that can be annoying. My PC is working better than ever. Thank you also for such great advice upon the different programs I can use to protect my PC against malware.

Well...I can't thank you enough. I feel it's only fair that I should give a little back, so hopefully very soon I shall be pressing that donation button under your sig. It's the least I can do. :tazz:
