The link below is to a problem of very similar nature. In fact I copied a lot of text right from this posting because it is exactly what is happening with my computer.
http://www.geekstogo...showtopic=64662

Environment: I have Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 with all critical and driver updates on a Compaq Persario Intel Celeron CPU 2.93 GHz, 504 MB of RAM, 80 GB hard drive.

Recently, explorer.exe has been hogging nearly all of the CPU time, making anything else run extremely slowly or sometimes not at all. Task Manager shows explorer.exe continually getting over 95% -- often 99% -- of the CPU regardless of what else is running. I can help things a little by lowering the priority of explorer.exe in Task Manager, but even then it gets nearly all the CPU time and slows the system down to a crawl.

Neither Lavasoft Ad-Aware nor Spybot Search & Destroy found anything notable -- lots of tracking cookies, all of which I removed. CWShredder found nothing

Explorer.exe will not run in Safe Mode, although it will run in Safe Mode with Networking. If I boot into Safe Mode (without networking), the dialog box that asks if you want to run Safe Mode pops up for about a second and then disappears, leaving a blank screen (except for the Safe Mode headers and footers). The only way to run anything is to start up Task Manager (with Ctrl-Alt-Del) and then run things from there.

Here are my ewido report scan and my hi-jack this log:

Hello and welcome to Geeks To Go

I have just had a quick look at your HJT log, it is virtually clean, but I believe that we are not seeing all of the log. This is not due to anything you have done; some malware has the ability to hide when interrogated by hijackthis.

Please right click on hijackthis.exe and rename it to crusty.exe then rescan and post the resultant log and I'll take a further look.

I've noticed svchost.exe was taking up 99% of my cpu usage once or twice. I don't know if that is a seperate problem all together or part of the same. Anyway here is my most recent hijackthis scan.

I ended the explorer.exe process when i did the hijackthis scan last time so that may have made a difference to, but I changed the file name to crusty.exe and here is the scan.

Hello again

A two-second squint at the log tells me you have a ConHook infection; this being the file that downloads Vundo.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log, from normal mode, in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If Vundofix does not find and delete the files, please try running it bit differently:
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files?
  • Copy & paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes:
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutu.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ututv.*
  • Click Add Files and click Close Window.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log, from normal mode.

Hello again

The HJT you posted showed more than just the ConHook infection, which I have not cleaned yet.

Please post the logs as requested and I will clean your PC fully; I don't like doing half-jobs, they damage my reputation.

Please note that your HijackThis log posted is scattered, and frankly they are difficult enough to read without the extra burden. Please ensure that your HJT logs are in single-spaced format:

To remove the double spacing in your log, please do the following:
  • Please go to Start >> Run... and type notepad.exe
  • Hit OK.
  • Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.
  • Close Notepad.
  • When posting use PREVIEW POST to check before clicking ADD REPLY
Please post a fresh HJT log from normal mode; I have read the Vundofix logs dated 16, 17 and 26 September.

Hello again

That's better.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {555BEA72-3EAA-4DF2-BA6E-EF48CCE82115} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutu.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winwly32 - winwly32.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate and delete this file:

C:\Windows\ALCXMNTR.EXE

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look. How's the PC running now?
