Hello. :whistling:

First.. do you recognize this IP address?

12.32.81.251

===

You seem to have McAfee before, but I think you uninstalled it? It's not safe nowadays to surf online without an antivirus.. If you don't like McAfee, then I can recommend this free Antivirus, I use it also:

Download AVG AntiVirus Free and then install it.
Configure it how you wish then update it. Next, perform a full system scan. Remove/quarantine everything found. Reboot.

=====================================

Please open HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and then place a checkmark beside each of these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://as.starware.c...95MouNwJlkkwQ==
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.excite.com
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai....302/Coupons.cab

After placing all the checkmarks, close all windows (except HJT), and then hit Fix Checked. When it finishes, exit HJT.

=====================================

Post with a fresh Hijackthis log. :blink:

Hello Jag11,
First and foremost, thanks for your help. :whistling:
I do not know what this ip address is 12.32.81.251 which you referred to. All I can think is it may have been the address to my home network I had when my daughter was home from college.

I will give you a little background on my mcafee, I was hit with the virtumonde virus when my daughter came back from college and it , I beleve, attacked mcafee. I had upper level support from mcafee and they could not figure out why I could not get it to work or accept the download. This went on for a month or so and I was firm with no surfing the internet!! I finally uninstalled it but it appears to be showing up everywhere with left over files!
I then tried AVG which I did not like,and I ended up with zone alarm. Which is my antivirus and firewall.
I am unsure why this pc is so slow lately???? I do have all the scans like spybot,adaware, spyware blaster. Any hints why this pc is now so slow and hangs up?? THANKS!!!

I ran hijack this and here is the new log
I also ran the panda activescan and here is the log for your reference.

Hello again. :whistling:

ZoneAlarm is only a firewall, and is not an Antivirus.. so you need an Antivirus.
If you don't like AVG, then just reinstall McAfee.. tell me if it worked.

You also said you had Vundo before.. so let's try to run this:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your Desktop. (if you already have one, then delete that and download this new one.)
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • It will make a log in C:\vundofix.txt, please include that in your next reply.
=====================================

Locate and delete the following file(s), if present : C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Desktop\Unused Desktop Shortcuts\DivXPro511Adware.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SearchHook1.dll

=====================================

Delete everything "INSIDE" this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\AOL Spyware Protection\Backup\

  • Click Start » Run » type: Notepad » OK
  • Copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text below (inside the box) to Notepad.

    REGEDIT4

    [-hkey_classes_root\clsid\{147A976E-EEE1-4377-8EA7-4716E4CDD239}]

    [-hkey_local_machine\software\classes\ClientAX.ClientInstaller]

  • Make sure there are no black spaces before REGEDIT4 and there should be one blank line at the end.
  • Click File at the top and then choose Save As.
  • Change Save As Type to All Files.
  • Name it FixME.reg and save it on your desktop.
  • Its icon should look like this : Posted Image
  • Double click FixME.reg. It will ask you if you want to merge it to the registry, click Yes.
=====================================

Then post a new Hijackthis log and then the VundoFix log. :blink:

Good Morning,
Thanks for your reply!!

I can not download and install mcaffee antivirus, I had some upper level support working on it and they could not figure it out either. To answer your question about my zone alarm......... This version I purchased has an antivirus program with it. I could have just purchased the firewall only but I believe in having an up to date virus protection. I enjoy the firewall protection as well, with that being said, zone alarm asked me today about a new network ?? it's ip is 72.185.112.0/255.255.248.0 I put it into a restricted zone. Should I delete this ? Where would this new network come from??? I know some things about pc's but far from an expert.

on another note I am seeing these icons showing up on my desk top they look like a ghosted notepad icon with a gear on them .... one is labeled thumbs and the other is desktop??? These also show up in mycomputer/ local disk along with a whole list of files named, sqmdataxx.sqm where xx is numbers, also sqmnooptxx.sqm. and yvkit.vlr. These are all new to me.

I removed the files that you sugggested and also ran another HJT and vundofix here are the reports:

http://www.dnsstuff....=mozilla-search

255.255.248.0
http://www.dnsstuff....=mozilla-search

==

on another note I am seeing these icons showing up on my desk top they look like a ghosted notepad icon with a gear on them .... one is labeled thumbs and the other is desktop???

Does it look like this?

Posted Image

If yes, can you right-click on the file, and then select "EDIT". Post the contents of those 2 files.

==

hese also show up in mycomputer/ local disk along with a whole list of files named, sqmdataxx.sqm where xx is numbers, also sqmnooptxx.sqm. and yvkit.vlr.

The sqmdataXX.sqm files seem to be related to MSN Messenger.. do you use it?

But I can't find any info about yvkit.vlr, can you submit it to Jotti and get it scanned?

I'm suspicious with one of the files in your log.
I need you to submit it to get it scanned.
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the File to upload & scan box on the top of the page:

    C:\yvkit.vlr

  • Click on the Submit button
  • Please post the results in your next reply.
=====================================

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:

Uninstall the old version of Java, which is 1.5.0.3.

==

Then post the Jotti result :help: Also tell me if you still have any other problems. BTW, your log looks clean again! :blink:

Ok, we need to do some cleaning on that account. :whistling:

Again thanks alot.!! Any advise on getting rid of all those files associated with mcafee.

Let's try this.. it should get the registry entries that McAfee made.

Download RegSeeker from here:
http://www.snapfiles.../regseeker.html

Open RegSeeker.

Check the "Backup before Deletion" box.
Check Clean the Registry.
Check ALL boxes and click OK.

When the scan has finished click Select all, then Select all.
Right-click on the highlighted area and click Delete selected items.

NOTE: Bear in mind this removes unused file extensions, so you may want to check if there are any you want to keep, and deselect them.

OK the prompt.

Exit RegSeeker.

* By the way, have you deleted McAfee's folder yet? If not, delete it too: c:\program files\mcafee.com\
I also included McAfee's entries in the Hijackthis fix list..

I also do not like anything AOL !!! and I see that it runs in the HJT log lol

You have "AOL Connectivity Service" in there.. tell me if you want to keep it.. if you want to delete it, let me know, we'll take care of that later..

========

Please open HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and then place a checkmark beside each of these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.hotmail.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://as.starware.c...0dpQRpLqJ22B5ZL
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...?p=ZRxdm185YYUS
O23 - Service: McAfee WSC Integration (McDetect.exe) - Unknown owner - c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcdetect.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: McAfee Task Scheduler (McTskshd.exe) - Unknown owner - c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mctskshd.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager (mcupdmgr.exe) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe (file missing)

There are several entries showing in your log within the Trusted Zone in Internet Explorer.

The Trusted Zone has very low security settings and any sites contained there are able to run scripts on your computer without giving you any warnings or prompts.

If you did not add the following sites to your Trusted Zone or don't recognise the address then you should have HijackThis fix them too:

O15 - Trusted Zone: www.capitolone.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.hotmail.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.myflorida.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.wamu.com

After placing all the checkmarks, close all windows (except HJT), and then hit Fix Checked. When it finishes, exit HJT.

=====================================

Reboot and post a new Hijackthis log. :blink:

Hi Jag!!

Again thanks!

I downloaded the reg seeker and ran it. I guess there was so many entries I received an error message in French. I had to translate it using babel fish. It said index of list except limits lol just my luck. I went through each of the check boxes and removed what I could. Hkey root seems to be the one that maxes it out ??? :whistling:

This is an FYI I still have long wait times for programs to load. ie. internet explorer takes over a minute to open up.

I have already deleted mcafee's folder..

In regards to the "AOL Connectivity Service" my girlfriend wants to keep AIM as she chats with many family members. Will removing this entry harm the program AIM if it does not I want to remove it.

The trusted web addresses have been okd by my girlfriend

Here is the new HJT log

In regards to the "AOL Connectivity Service" my girlfriend wants to keep AIM as she chats with many family members. Will removing this entry harm the program AIM if it does not I want to remove it.

Let's just get an Uninstall list and then you tell me what AOL programs you want to remove. :whistling:

Please open HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and then place a checkmark beside each of these entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O23 - Service: McAfee WSC Integration (McDetect.exe) - Macromedia - (no file)
O23 - Service: McAfee Task Scheduler (McTskshd.exe) - Macromedia - (no file)
O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager (mcupdmgr.exe) - Macromedia - (no file)

After placing all the checkmarks, close all windows (except HJT), and then hit Fix Checked. When it finishes, exit HJT.

=====================================

And this is the uninstall list:

Generate an Uninstall List
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click on Open Misc Tools Section
  • Click on Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click on Save list
  • Save it to your Desktop
  • Post it on your next reply. Also tell me what AOL programs you want to remove..
=====================================

YIKES mcafee looks like it does not want to leave lol

Don't worry, we'll try another method to remove those services. :whistling:

1. Click Start > Run > type: sc stop McDetect.exe > OK
2. Click Start > Run > type: sc delete McDetect.exe > OK

1. Click Start > Run > type: sc stop McTskshd.exe > OK
2. Click Start > Run > type: sc delete McTskshd.exe > OK

1. Click Start > Run > type: sc stop mcupdmgr.exe > OK
2. Click Start > Run > type: sc delete mcupdmgr.exe > OK

=====================================

looking at this list we have aim and aol instant messenger which we want, I guess there are no other AOL products on here.

Here's a way to remove some AOL Programs and leave some:

Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Then from the list, find:

AOL Uninstaller

A window should pop-up, and then from there, it will guide you which AOL program you want to remove.

Do you have any other problems? :blink:

My pleasure briggsd! :whistling:

Now that you're clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1.) Re-Hide System Files and Folders:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
2.) Reset and Re-enable your System Restore

We need to do this to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Click Start » Run » ( type: SYSDM.CPL ) » OK
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply.
  • Uncheck - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click OK.
You have now flushed your previous System Restore points, so we will make a new one again since your computer is already clean.
  • Go to Start » All Programs » Accessories » System Tools, and select System Restore
  • In the System Restore prompt, select: Create a restore point
  • Click Next
  • Give a description to the new Restore Point. (Something like: Clean PC)
  • Click Create
  • Then close the window
3.) How to Prevent Re-Infection

Please take your time reading on this list, it is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Windows Updates (a must!) - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this, open Internet Explorer, then and select Tools » Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Firewall (a must!) - It is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio and ZoneAlarm.
  • Anti-Virus (a must!) - It is also a must have. Two good programs are Avast and AVG, they're both free.
    Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV because if you have 2 AVs, it will conflict with each other and will only make your system slow.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.
