Items in blue which are underlined are clickable to give more information about the process

Start the System Restore Utility at a command prompt

1. Restart your computer, and keep tapping F8 during the initial start-up until you get options, select Safe Mode with a Command Prompt then press enter.

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.

3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

Look for the most recent system checkpoint created before the errors to restore from

well heres something for you to know
you dont have to uninstall norton to install a new version
the program will overwrite the other or older one youll probably ask if you want to overwrite you say yes

heres a tip when you uninstall a program like norton you dont say yes to all

click no or yes but not yes to all

thats how you lost you lnk file

i believed you were asked that

when you click remove

how can you get extension file back im looking in to it

you may have to reinstall service pack and get updates

maybe some one has other ideas

try a system restore

I didn't have any restore points to goto, so that was out of the qestion.

next i could not edit anything in the registry files cause it wouldn't let me change anything.

i ended up doing a re-install of XP and that put everything back to normal.....i didn't lose anything.(thank god.

thanks for the help anyway folks.
