well, this sucks... after half a dozen searches, none of them, that I could find, are free

I think I'll just reformat after all... I could have already done it a dozen times since I started this thread. I've gotten pretty [bleep] good at that. I can do it in about 6 hours or so, including all the stuff I have to go find on google.

I'm not good at everything computerwise but I have learned some things, and reformatting is one

When you start the computer with the files I said to turn off. Does it run fine with these files turned off? You said you turned them back on.
Why ?
Turn them off - leave them off and see how it runs.

No, I said once the computer is actually running a restart usually works too (always that I've noticed). It's the cold starts that have the problem and, so far, no sugestions have fixed it.

I don't know why but I've got a feeling the problem is in windows itsef... the system goes into freeze almost instanrly after the screensaver comes on. I never used to use that (only for the last two or three weeks)

the prob showed up before I used screensaver but... it's more promenent now.

Try pulling the graphics card out and reseating, then check for updated drivers.

After trying the graphic card if you have a windows cd then go
Start>run>sfc click ok
This will check for files that could be corrupt. It it needs to replace the files then
point to the windows cd.

Graphics and sound were built in to the motherbaord... I'll try the windows cd fix first. Thanks.

sfc found one corrupted file setupx.dll

I restored it but won't know until my next cold-start if this fixed the problem. Sure hope so. It's getting very frustrating.

You can also use Scandisk in MS-DOS mode to fix this problem.

Ok, the problem turned out to be a bad CPU fan. uP was overheating. Happened to have a replacement fan lying around but as soon as i replaced it I lost the video output. Shortly after that i lost all power. Time for a new puter, I think. (I'm at the library right now) Will be a couple of weeks yet before I'm back on-line from home.

If you build or buy the computer may I suggest that you partition the hard drive so that windows sits by itself.
I have mine As C drive for windows D drive for programs and a second disk for data. Whenever possible I try to put all programs /applications on D drive
Some programs won't let you but a lot will. I then use go back this way you can take just the C drive back and not loose data. Go back loads before windows so I find it better then system restore.
