I believe i have virus, trojan, malware or something that's seriously annoying me.

Ok, description: There's something blinking at the taskbar on the bottom right of my Screen, (i'm using windows XP) and it continuously changes from a red circle that is used for no smoking areas and the ? icon for Windows help... and when i click on this... it takes me to http://www.virusburst.com/?aff=334 this site.

PLease help me get rid of this - it keeps on coming back up after i uninstall this unwanted program. Another taskbar popup frequently comes up and when i click on it... it takes me to http://www.pesttrap.com/?advid=177.

Please help. As a suggestion, this is a very similar problem to one i had before (which geekstogo.com fixed for me, thx for that). SPYWAREQUAKE or something? The advertising product has a remarkably similar design too... i'm wondering if they are collaborating or something

Here's a hijack log thing... hope it helps

Hi :whistling:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1, and press Enter.
  • A text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
  • Please copy/paste the contents of C:\rapport.txt into your next reply along with a new Hijackthis log.
  • Do not run the other options of this tool yet until you are asked to do so!

You may want to print out these instructions or save it as a text document, and use them as a reference. If you have any questions regarding the fix, please ask us before proceeding. Please make sure that you follow this in the right order as I have listed.

=====================================

Reboot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer.
  • Before the Windows logo appear, tap F8 repeatedly.
  • A menu should appear, select Safe Mode from the menu using your arrow keys and then hit Enter on your keyboard.
  • This will take a while than usual, so just wait.
=====================================

Open the SmitfraudFix folder.
  • Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
  • The report can also be found here - C:\rapport.txt
  • NOTE : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
=====================================

In your next reply, please include these log(s):
  • HijackThis log (new)
  • C:\rapport.txt

the flashing things at the bottom appear to have disappeared... BUT my HOMEPAGE continues to be stuck on MSN.com whereas my normal is www.google.com

Does that mean there's still a problem?

Hello,

the flashing things at the bottom appear to have disappeared..

Glad to hear that.

BUT my HOMEPAGE continues to be stuck on MSN.com whereas my normal is www.google.com

Have you tried changing your homepage manually to google.com?

Next:

Download ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Run an online scan at Panda's ActiveScan
  • Please go here using Internet Explorer.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open, click the big Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country.
    • Enter your State/Province.
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send.
    • Select either Home User or Company.
    • Click the big Scan Now button.
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan.
  • When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
  • Post the Panda report along with a new Hijackthis log.

hey jag when i try panda activescan... i get this
Error on downloading ActiveScanAn error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try againPossible causes of this error are:

Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded.

Problems with the Internet connection.

The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,...

any suggestions?

btw, i did the ATF cleaner and i have tried to manually put my homepage as google.com (Tools - Internet Options... etc)

i don't think i would disable ActiveX installation... seems that this sort of problem is similar to when i try to update my Norton Anti Virus definitions - it won't let me connect with them...

could you be able to find something to this?

Let's check your ActiveX settings:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click on Default Level and click Ok
  • Click on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Check that Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting is set to Enabled or Prompt
    • Check that Run ActiveX controls and plugins is Enabled
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • Check that Active Scripting is set to Enabled
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

i have tried to manually put my homepage as google.com (Tools - Internet Options... etc)

Did it fixed the homepage problem?

seems that this sort of problem is similar to when i try to update my Norton Anti Virus definitions - it won't let me connect with them...

I think the Norton problem is a diffferent story.. because if you use Norton's built-in updater, it will not use ActiveX. Have you checked your subscription? Is it not yet expired? How long have you been not updating Norton?

---

After you check the settings of your ActiveX, then try Panda scan again, and tell me if it worked.. If not, then we'll just try another online scanner. :whistling:

1. crap... it didn't work Panda active scan still has the same message

2. The homepage is still MSN.com

3. Yeh... i haven't updated Norton for about 3 months now.

4. There was only 1 difference in the Security Settings "Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
" which my computer had on Disable... But didn't seem to have changed anything...

ok.. doesn't seem like these worked very well.. :S

Doesn't matter... so where's the other online scanner site?

Let's try this:

Run an online scan at Kaspersky
  • Please go here to run Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner.
  • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
[*]Click OK
[*]Now under select a target to scan, select My Computer.
[*]This will scan your system.
[*]The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
[*]Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
[*]Now click on the Save as Text button, and save it to your Desktop.
[*]Copy and paste that information in your next post along with a new Hijackthis log.
[/list]

Hello again,

Hmm, your Kaspersky log shows some Smitfraud files... Let's cleam 'em.

Uninstall Programs
  • Click Start » Run » type: appwiz.cpl » OK
  • Find and remove the following program(s) (if present):

    strCodec

  • Close the "Add/Remove Programs" window after uninstalling.
  • Then restart your computer.
=====================================

Locate and delete the following folder(s), if present : C:\Program Files\strCodec

C:\!KillBox\

=====================================

Now you need to delete the infected files in your Norton AntiVirus Quarantine.
Go to this page and follow the directions for emptying Quarantine for your version of Norton Antivirus:
Removing files from Norton AntiVirus Quarantine

Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
  • Click Start » Run » type: control sysdm.cpl,,4 » OK
  • Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives.
  • Click Apply.
  • Then tick the checkbox again to turn on System Restore.
  • Click Apply, then OK.
=====================================

Download CCleaner (freeware).
  • Run the installer after downloading.
  • During installation process, please UNCHECK "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar".
  • When it finishes, open CCleaner.
  • Click the Windows tab.
  • Select the following:
    • Check everything under the Internet Explorer section.
    • Check everything under the Windows Explorer section.
    • Check everything under the System section.
    • Check ONLY Old Prefetch data under the Advanced section.
  • Next, click the Options icon, then click the Advanced button:
    • UNCHECK : "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Next, click the Cleaner icon, then click the Run Cleaner button (bottom right).
  • When it finishes, close CCleaner.
NOTE : Please do NOT use the Applications tab or the Issues icon. Keep to the Cleaner icon and the Windows tab.

=====================================

Please download SmitfraudFix (delete the old one that you already have.)

Hi,

Okay i have tried to change my homepage agian... ain't working... still MSN.com dunno why

What's the computer's brand? Because I remember some computers make the default page as MSN.com and make it hard to change it..

You might want to try this also:

Go to your desired HomePage.
Then click Tools > Internet Options.
Under "Home Page", click the "Use Current" button, then click on "OK".

Tell me if it worked.

and the stuff that you told me to do on Norton Antivirus, well, it still won't connect to their site...

What do you mean? Can you:

Open Norton (the antivirus program itself) and then click on the Update button (or anything similar) then update? Does it work?
Or your problem is:

You can't connect to Norton's website (symantec.com) through your browser?
