activex problems (i think)

for a while now i have not been able to log in to messenger, it opens unusually slowly and then wont work at all once i have put my details in, also when i try to log into my gmail it prompts me to enable my activex controls, which im pretty sure ive done, so i have to view in in HTML. when i open up a java applet to type in the name of a photo album on bebo.com it has no effect and does not add the new album name to the menu. also my computer has been running much slower than usual, i dont know if this is a related problem.
