the first thing you do is un-install any software that you have installed previously for your ipod.
download the latest update for that driver then plug your ipod to your system before and let windows find it. It will ask you to supply the driver or the software.

I guess you've been using IPW cuz if you havent then that error is very VERY rare. anyways, follow samiko's suggestion.
