My computer has been doing this for a few weeks, but it's recently gotten a bit worse.
Randomly, at anytime, it'll restart. I've tried seeing if it happens when I'm doing something specific, but there doesn't really seem to be anything. It's just anytime, whenever it feels like it Oo.
Though it seems to be okay when I use the internet, occasionally it will still restart during anything.

Now, I'm kind of questioning whether it's a virus, but that brings us to a whole nother problem! x.x

You see, we sent our computer in to a guy that a lady at my work knows, who we bought a video card from, and he installed it, ever since we got it back, Norton has done nothing but give us errors. One time though, it told me to uninstall and re-install it, and I did. But now, when my computer starts up, it keeps telling me that I need to do the liveupdate, but I've done it, three times. It also tells me I have to do a full system scan, but that brings us to problem number one, it always seems to restart during the full system scan.

Anyone have any ideas on what I should do?

Please and thankyou!

(it's kind of late, so please excuse any typos)

Do you have any other anti-virus programs on the PC? Unlike anti-spyware programs, anti-virus programs don't play nicely together on the same PC.
I've been seeing a lot of criticism of Norton lately on the forums as a resource hog. I dumped Norton several years ago when I got tired of problems with my subscription. I had to reinstall Norton and after that it insisted that my subscription had run out even thought I'd renewed recently. So I went to AVG, a free anti-virus program. AVG doesn't score as well against malware as some of the top programs, but it's done OK for me.
If you decide you want to try AVG, first download AVG to your desktop but do not install it. Then uninstall Norton completely. Restart the PC, look around for Norton programs still hanging around. Once you've gotten it off your PC as well as you can, install AVG and get new definitions. AVG will install a colorful squarish-shaped icon in your systray (lower right hand corner of screen) which turns gray after about 3 days as a reminder to get new updates. Unless you set it up to get updates automatically.
Are you running a firewall? Zone Alarm is a free firewall which works better than XP's firewall because it monitors outgoing traffic. XP doesn't.
If you really think you've got a virus you should post at the Security section, where they'll give you specific directions.
However, random shutdowns without any Windows bluescreens or other signs of trouble are often power supply problems.
How old is the PC? What kind? Have you added any power-hungry components, such as a high-end video card? Do you know how to get into your BIOS and check your voltages? You'll see plenty of power supply threads over the last few weeks or months if you want more details on what sorts of problems people ask and how to diagnose the symptoms.

I'll try downloading AVG. Yeah, I got the subscription thing too, and now the Windows Security Center is telling me that Norton is out of date -.-;
We don't have any other Anti-Virus programs, I know that two don't work good and cause more bad than good.

All we have for the Firewall is the Windows one, so I'll get that too.

Ahh, yes, the video card! We -just- got one installed, and I did notice that after we got it the restarts were more frequent. I don't know how to check the voltages. Hmm, I'll go search the forum for those threads.
Also, the computer is.. hmm.. 2 years old? Yeah that sounds about right.

Thanks so much, you've been more help than all the computer techs we talked to XD

Shut off the auto restart in the control panel> system>advanced> start up> settings
If your computer shuts down, write down the exact error message and post it here. Also, have a look in your event logs (admin tools) for any messages corresponding to the time of the last interruption.

I don't think Norton is the problem here, btw.

Have you recently installed any new hardware? Like a cd or dvd drive? How much and what kind of memory config do you have? I'm moving this to hardware for the experts there to review.

The only thing that's been installed recently is a graphics card.

I don't know what memory config we have x.x
Any way I can check it?
