And there is no upd_manager.exe in the MSEnv... I'm going to go and do the cleaning up part now, will post those results next.

And URGE is part of the new WMP. It's their online store that has all the music information, I think.

Welp, Norton nor my Sound devices are showing up in the system tray. Also, Norton's still on the un-auto protect problem. Hrmmm.... what's the dealio? Why wouldn't Norton catch that one file with the virus? I'm gonna scan it right now, but why wouldn't it? I know Auto-Protect isn't on... but I've scanned my comp deeply since I've had these issues. Oh well, Hijackthis:

Well, I scanned it with Norton, nothing. My guess now is that the reason Norton didn't pick it up because it's spyware and not a virus...

Hi

Start Hijackthis
Run system scan and check:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B7672BAF-E9A3-49B6-86B2-C81719A18A4C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\aufkwbri.dll (file missing)

Close all open windows and click "fix checked"

Shouldn't need to reboot.

Find and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfrcstog.exe <--file

Can you get Internet Explorer to work yet?
If so can you do this scan please:

Using Internet Explorer please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Next....

Please post a complete startuplist log.

Start hijackthis
Click "open misc tools section"
check both options beside "generate startuplist log" and generate the log. Say OK & post results.

Then...

Download Blacklight beta from here:

http://www.f-secure....blacklight.html

Accept agreement.
Download blbeta.exe and save it.
Disconnect from internet & disable antivirus to prevent conflict.
Shut down other apps that you have open.
Double click blbeta.exe and accept agreement.
Allow the driver to load if asked.
Click "scan"
Wait till scan is done.
Once finished if any results just hit "close".
Do Not use this tool to rename anything yet! Sometimes legit items are hidden.
Log file is created on desktop called fsbl***.txt (*** is date/time of scan)

Re-enable antivirus, reconnect to net and post contents of that log here.

You may need a few posts to get the logs in.

One thing to note about antivirus programs is not any one will detect everything. This is one of the reasons we get people to run one or more scanners during cleanup. Sometimes the onboard antivirus program gets corrupt and cannot scan properly.

Thanks :whistling:

You weren't kidding about how long this'll take. At the rate I'm going, it'll take 4 more hours... well maybe even longer. It's been at 20% for a while, but it is scanning the files, so it hasn't locked up. Maybe it'll go faster when it's out of the MSDN library...

Hi

Thanks for the logs.

Please turn of your

Open notepad
Copy the following text and paste it into the open notepad window.
Save as file name Fix.reg
As file types: All files
Save it to the desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
UpdateManager=-

Once saved double click it and allow the merge.
You should get success message.

If you get warning from your antispyware about a run entry being removed from registry...allow it please.

You can delete fix.reg.

Reboot

I see Norton has in his quarentine some IRC bot files.
Unknown to me if it actually ran or if Norton caught em in time.

I would like to check some security settings commonly messed with.

Create a new folder on the desktop.
Copy the contents of this next code box to Notepad. Make sure word wrap is off.
Name the file inspect.bat
Save as Type: All files
Save in that new folder on the desktop.

Double click on inspect.bat and let it run.
When finished it will open a file in Notepad.
That file will be named lsa.txt
Please post the contents of lsa.txt into your next reply here.

If not exist Files MkDir Files

Hi

Question...well a couple :whistling:

Did you tell disable the warning in windows security center so it would quit bugging you about Norton not working?

Did you run "fix.reg" I had you make earlier? Did yoiu get any error messeges?

Do you still have the Norton CD?

Thanks

Yeah, I told Windows to stop with their little notification thinger because it annoyed me.

Yes, I ran the fix.reg and yes I didn't get any errors.

Yes, I still have the Norton disk.

Now... from me... It seems that nothing starts up in the system tray, and in fact, I just typed MSCONFIG in run and found that only a couple things start up and Norton nor my Audigy sound drivers are in that startup... they aren't even listed! So yeah, what the [bleep].

Hmmm

Well sumpthin's not right..

Download Gmer from here and save it to desktop:

http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Right click it> extract all> follow wizard to extract it to its own folder> click "finish"

Folder will open.

Double click gmer.exe
Let the driver load if asked (gmer.sys)
If you get warning of 'system modification" click "yes" to run scan.
This may take a while.
If no warning click "scan".
Wait till its done.
Once done, click "copy". Leave gmer open for next log I need.
click start> run> type notepad.exe and hit enter.
Right click in open notepad window & hit "paste".
Save the log and post it here.

If it is too big you can attach it please.

In open gmer window click the >>>> tab
Click "autostart" tab.
click "scan"
Wait till done
Once done click "copy"
open new notepad> right click in notepad> click "paste".
Save log and post it here.

Exit Gmer.

thanks :whistling:

Hi

Ok...Gmer logs are fine. Just that one startup we need to try fixing again.

Open notepad
Copy the following text and paste it into the open notepad window.
Save as file name Fix.reg
As file types: All files]
Save it to the desktop.

REGEDIT4
;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
UpdateManager=-
;

Once saved; double click it and allow the merge.
Should get success messege.
If your Windows Defender fires off a warning about a change in registry....allow it please.

Norton......

I think it will be best to uninstall Norton & re-install it. Be sure to get all the updates.
It will take several reboots & update sessions to get them all.

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall the following:

1) Norton systemworks
2) Live Reg
3) Live Update

You will need to reboot between each uninstall.
If it asks you aboout items in Quarentine...let the uninstaller delete it.

Re-install Norton SystemWorks
Grab all the updates. It will take several visits/update sessions to get em all.
Run full system scan with Norton Antivirus and let him clean/quarentine whatever he finds.
If stuff is found...reboot after to finish cleanup.

Post fresh hijackthis log and let me know how Norton is working. Auto Protect stay on?
Is your startup programs back in systray yet?
Any other odd stuff still happening?

Thanks :whistling:

Alright, I did the reg and everything, but now I need to uninstall Norton, etc. The disc is in my bro's room and he's currently sleeping, I'll nab it tomorrow, so I'll post tomorrow by around 5:00ish pm with an update, just don't want to leave you hanging all that time or whatev, so yeah, I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks for the post. Hopefully Norton finds these buggers and gets rid of 'em!

That was fast reply! :whistling:

I'll be around.
Norton is one of the hardest apps to troubleshoot...usually easiest to just uninstall/re-install it.

If Norton flags some baddies and cannot remove em...
Write down the file names and paths please. If possible also write down what norton is calling the nastie.

Thanks

Yeah, I check my emails constantly. I don't even know why. Yeah, but I'll do that. I've gotta get some sleep now. Thanks for all your help to this point, and yes, I'll be saying thank you about fifty more times once it's fixed :whistling:
