hi everyone

i have done a scan on my pc with spyware doctor and it says i have screenspy installed.
it is only a trial version of spy doctor so do i trust it as it says i have to buy to remove the spyscreen.

please can you see if i have any nastys on my pc

Screenspy is located in your System restore folder. Windows locks the restore folder from modification by any programs including antivirus, antispyware, etc.
Only way to remove infected files from there is to disable restore, reboot, then re-enable it again.
This action deletes all restore points including any infected files stored there.

However...

Since there is a few things we need to fix I would rather leave system restore for the last thing to fix. Nothing can hurt you from there unless we have to use it. I would like that safety net in place till we are done.

Please disable your spysweeper so it does not interfere with the fix:

1.) From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
2.) Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

Next...

Start Hijackthis, run system scan only and check the following items:

Once done, close all open windows except Hijackthis and click "fix checked".

Exit Hijackthis and reboot.

Once restarted....

Please update your version of Java. The older versions have security issues.

Next page that comes up you need to accept the agreement to download it.
First in list is the offline installation
This is the one to download. Save it to your desktop or your normal download folder.

1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web browser
2. Click Start > Control Panel
* Depending on your OS or configuration, you may have to click Start > Settings > Control Panel
3. Open Add or Remove Programs
* If you have Windows 98 or Windows 2000, open Add/Remove Programs
4. Click once on any item listing Java Runtime Environment in the name
* Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read each entry in the list
5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
6. Follow steps 4 and 5 as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java
7. Reboot your PC once all Java components have been removed
8. Proceed with reinstalling Java using the file you just saved.

A reboot may be required.

Please post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how the system is running.

Hi

Log looks good. Just 1 line to fix as it does not point to proper file.

Start Hijackthis, run system scan and check:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

Close all open windows and click "fix checked".

Reboot not required.

Other than that baddie showing up in System Volume information; everything else working OK?

Hi

I take it things are still running well?

If so...

After a few reboots and checking to see that all is well; it is highly recommended to reset your system restore to remove any possible backed up infected files there.

Right click "my computer"
Click "properties"
Click "system restore" tab
Checkmark "turn off system restore"
Hit apply> ok> ok.

Reboot

Go back and turn system restore back on by removing the check, hit apply, and OK.

A new restore point is created at this time.
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today.

Doing the above will remove that "screenspy" file that is stuck in system restore.

If you don't intend on buying Spyware Doctor uninstall it before the trial time runs out to prevent uninstall problems.

Your Ewido will continue to function even after the 30 days are up.
You will NOT have its backgroound protection or the automatic updates.
You can manually update the program and run scans to clean.

I recommend you install a 3rd party firewall. XP has its own but is not good for OUTgoing protection.
Fairly easy to learn but works well firewall is Zone Alarm.

Only install one though.
When it installs it may ask you if you want to disable XP firewall. Please allow this so you don't have conflicts.

You can delete that java installer off your desktop I had you download earlier.
