[Kurge]

Yesterday I began getting an annoying popup called Pest Trap. I used spybot to remove it, but it keeps coming back. Now it has locked me out of my desk top properties (i.e., can't change my background, etc.). I'm concerned it's going to continue locking me out of features until my computer is unusable.

Hi Kurge, welcome back.

You are currently using HijackThis from the desktop, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues.
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

STEPS For Creating Folder

1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

4. Close ALL windows except HJT

5. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

6. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

Please make sure you post the entire log including the top portion:

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please also post a fresh HijackThis log.

Everything went smoothly, although Pest Trap showed up in the system tray again within a minute or so of reboot.

I can understand your impatience & frustration, I've been a victim of malware myself.
However, everyone here is a volunteer, many of who work full time & do this in their spare time for free.
Every log is different & we need time to analyse the results of the tools we ask you to run. That is how we work out the fix. As I said in an earlier post there are a couple of nasty infections in your log that we need to fix as well as PestTrap.


Step 1
Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop. Don't run it yet.

Step 2
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.
Close HijackThis.

Step 3
Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select: Delete on Reboot then Click on the All Files button.
Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually & boot into SAFE mode. As soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode..

[*]If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Step 4
Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Weatherbug
PestTrap <------ I don't think this will be here but just to double check.

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present): Only delete the folders in RED, not the whole path.

After that, Reboot into normal windows.

Step 5
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step 6
Download haxfix.exe
and save it to your desktop.

• Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
• Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
• Click "Next"
• When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
• Click "Finish"

A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
4. Exit Haxfix

• Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
• Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt > (c:\haxfix.txt)
• Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread together with a fresh HijackThis log.

I completed the steps above, and did not receive a "PendingFileRenameOperations" prompt.

PestTrap was still in the add/remove programs list and on the C: drive. At first I could not remove it from the list. However, after I deleted the PestTrap folder, I went back to add/remove programs and was able to remove it.

WeatherBug was easy to remove.

After I completed the steps outlined, I rebooted. PestTrap re-appeared in the system tray after about a minute, and I still can't change my desktop background.

First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

• Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
• Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
• On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
  • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
• Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

• Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
  IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
• Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
• ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  Once the scan is complete do the following:
• If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
• Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
• Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
• Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

Next,

• Open this folder program files > haxfix and double click on fix.bat (or double click on fix.bat desktop icon)
• Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot
• Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter

If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.

• Close all open windows except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter
• The computer will reboot
• After reboot a logfile will open > (c:\haxfix.txt)
• Post the contents of that logfile along with a new HijackThis log.

We need to double check that we've got rid of all the bad files for PestTrap so please
Open the SmitfraudFix folder again that you extracted in post #4 and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
