I am getting popups trying to force me to download Winantivirus software. I know this is some kind of virus, but can't seem to get rid of it.

CAN ANYONE HELP BEFORE I GO NUTS?

* Click here to download VundoFix.exe and save it to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
• You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
• When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the *Scan for Vundo* button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

* Also open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list here.

Why have you not installed Service Pack 2 yet? Do you realize that after Oct 10th, you will no longer be able to receive any Windows Updates if you don't have Service Pack 2?

* You have Hijack This in a Temp folder still zipped:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

It will not function properly from a temp folder or while it is still zipped. You obviously didn't download it according to my instructions. You can either delete the Hijackthis file you have now and download it again acording to my previous instructions or you can create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Right click on the HijackThis.zip file and choose "Extract all" and extract it to the Hijack This folder you created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from. We cannot use Hijack This to fix anything until you have it in a permanent folder and unzipped.


* Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall these:

* Click here to download smitRem.exe.

• Save the file to your desktop.
• It is a self extracting file.
• Doubleclick the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your desktop.
• Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.
• If the link to SmitRem above is not working try this one.

* Next download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.

• Click on the "Download Now" button and save the setup file to your desktop.
• Doubleclick on the ewido-setup file to begin the installation.
• When the installation is complete, open ewido and update the definition files.
• On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
  • Select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• When the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
• Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
• If you cannot download the updates, update manuallly according to the directions here.
• DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.


* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.


* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:


* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.


* Run ewido:

• Launch ewido by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
• ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient it may take a while for the scan to complete.
• When the scan is complete, if you have any infections you will be prompted to select an action.
• Select "Apply all actions"
• Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
• Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen
• Save the report as a text file and save it to your desktop.
• Close ewido.

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


* Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK.


* Restart back into Windows normally now.


* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, save the results from the scan!

SmitRem creates a log file with the results of it's fix in C:\smitfiles.txt. Go to your C drive and locate the smitfiles.txt file. Copy and paste the contents of the smitfiles.txt file in your next reply here along with a new HiJackThis log and the results from ActiveScan

I have copied smitRem log file, new Hijack This file and Active Scan file. I ran the ewido just as you said. It ran fine (it took over 2 hours!). Then I clicked "Apply all actions" It froze up and would not respond. I though it was just because it found so many infected files, but after an hour, the top bar showed "not responding". I used the task manager to close the program and tried to restart it, but it would never open again. I even tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling again from the link in your post, but it still would not open. I was never able to save the report fromt this program.

Where can I get SP2 for Windows XP? I have heard alot of bad things about problems with it, so I never upgraded. Should I?

I have copied smitRem log file, new Hijack This file and attached the Active Scan file (it was too long to copy to this post). I ran the ewido just as you said. It ran fine (it took over 2 hours!). Then I clicked "Apply all actions" It froze up and would not respond. I though it was just because it found so many infected files, but after an hour, the top bar showed "not responding". I used the task manager to close the program and tried to restart it, but it would never open again. I even tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling again from the link in your post, but it still would not open. I was never able to save the report from this program.

Where can I get SP2 for Windows XP? I have heard alot of bad things about problems with it, so I never upgraded. Should I?

Active scan is too large to attach (6MB) and too large to copy and paste (too many characters for the post). Is this normal? How can I get it to you?

Split the Activescan log into two parts or whatever you have to do to posty it. Also restart your computer and try the ewido scan again.

Do this also:

* Go here to download AlcanShorty_en.exe and save it to your desktop.

• Doubleclick the alcanShorty.exe file and follow prompts.
• It will make a folder on desktop called Alcan Shorty
• Open the Alcan Shorty folder & double click the run.bat file to run it.
• This will download a file called BFU.exe and a BFU script.
• If your firewall asks for permission to connect to the internet, you must allow it.
• A message box will pop up saying complete.
• Be patient ans wait for the message box to appear as it may take some time.
• Press OK then BFU.exe will open.
• Select the option to "Show log after script ends"
• Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.
• Note that you should see a progress bar while the script is being executed.
• When the script has finished press copy & that will make a copy of the report in your clipboard.
• Paste the log into notepad and save it to your desktop to post back here later.
