[msi]

This morning I discovered that my computer was infected with several trojans. My antivirus program is McAfee. I kept getting a blinking icon in my bottom tray and it would take me to Virus Blast. I also started to get multiple messages about a Puper Trojen and Zango. Here is what I have done to attempt to clean up my machine:

Ran McAffe Virus Scan
Ran Ad-aware SE
Ran CWShreder
Ran Spybot S&D
Ran Ewido Anti-Malware
Ran Trend Housecall

Would somebody please check my HiJack this log and tell me if I am clean?

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".


The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Then, run a free online scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus (works only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher).
Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").

• In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
• When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
• When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
• Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
• Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.

When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window, and post the text in kavscan.txt in your next reply.


Please be sure to include the smitfraudfix report, the kaspersky log, and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

I'm replying from a different computer because I followed the instructions up to the point of selecting option #2 and pressing enter. Then my screen went blank except for the "safe mode" in the four corners and the windows xp banner across the top. I see that there was a warning about running this on a non infected computer but what do I do now?

Also, there should have been more at the end of the smitfraudfix report you just posted. Did that get cut off? If so, could you try to post that again?

Please disable SpywareGuard, as it may interfere with some of our HijackThis fixes:

Right click the SpywareGuard icon in the System Tray at the bottom-right corner of the screen and open the program.
Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.


Next, run a scan with HijackThis and place a check in the box beside these entries if present:

You can clean out your recycle bin and then reboot.


After rebooting, please run a new scan with HijackThis and post its log along with the last smitfraudfix report if you can.

Yes I was able to delete the ZangoToolbar folder.

I double checked the smitfraudfix file and I did not cut anything off. However, as I mentioned above my screen went abruptly black after I selected Option 2 and pressed enter. I never did receive any of the other prompts that you mentioned.

Hi again, I kind of thought that may be the case with the logfile. So, let's make sure those bad entries are gone.

It should look like this:

Spoke too soon. McAfee keeps finding a PUP. I've removed it and rescanned my computer and it still is appearing.

Hello, it's finding that in the system restore area so it's not active. You can clean the system restore area out by doing this:

Click Start > Help and Support > Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start > Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
