my internet is down but my wireless has picked up a sig and can log on how secure is it to use a open conn??????

It depends on your security settings and who owns the connection. It can be dangerous if you have file sharing enabled and a machine that is not up to date on patches. There is also the fact that in most places it's considered stealing to use someone's connection without being invited. I have no objections as an unsecured connection is an open invetation to share but then my wireless is encrypted to avoid the confusion of invited or not.
