If you repair an install of XP this usually just overwrites the installation including the registry.

Well, the Windows XP registry keys will be reset, but not registry keys from other programs (such AIM and such) from my understanding.

Well in my experience Windows settings (in the registry) are USUALLY retained but dont rely on it!
Assume they are lost.
