[wmerideth]

I have ran numerous adware/malware programs, my antivirus, went through my system processes, startup, etc.... but I just can't seem to get whatever is on my system to come off. Recently I have been having annoying advertising pop-ups and a message saying I have been infected with some kind of virus. I am pasting my Hijack This log. Any help you guys (and girls ) can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I can see some malware in your log however, certain malware has the ability to hide when interrogated by hijackthis; I believe this to be true in your case.

Please right click on hijackthis.exe and rename it to crusty.exe. Please rescan and post the resultant log and I'll take a look.

This is where you'll find the file: C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\Local Settings\Temp\HijackThis.exe

I would be happier if you moved the programme to its own folder rather than a temp folder, which I like to empty.

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then Program Files.
In the menu bar, go to File>New>Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can right-click on and rename to HJT or HijackThis. Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Cut ‘n’ Paste your HijackThis.exe into it.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans including ConHook. It was a good call to rename HJT; check the 02 and 020 entries on each log. Let’s see what we can do with the first fix to get rid of the ConHook..

I want to check with you whether or not the Zone Alarm you have installed is just a firewall or an antivirus programme too. Also I see some 016 historical entries referring to Symantec, indicating Norton AV at some time in the past. I am concerned that it might not have uninstalled correctly.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log, from normal mode, in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If Vundofix does not find and delete the files, please try running it bit differently:

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
• When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
• Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files?
• Copy & paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes:
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\hggge.dll
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\egggh.*
• Click Add Files and click Close Window.
• Click the Remove Vundo button.

• Turn your computer back on.

I do have admin rights, so that is not a problem. I also do have multiple user accounts on this system, but only one is mainly used. The Zone Alarm program that I am using is the free firewall. I only run one antivirus, and thats Esset's NOD32. I am not sure if I have ever loaded any Symantec programs onto this system, I might have, but it was a few years back. I checked througout the system and I can not find any remnants of any Norton programs. I ran VundoFix and it found a few files that is said it deleted. It couldn't delete one of them, so it restarted the PC and ran again at startup to get rid of it. I am posting the log file to VundoFix and a fresh HJT log.

By the way....have you ever heard of NOD32? If you have, do you have any opinions on it? I have been questioning it these past few months since I have been having all of these problems pop up on me. Any recommendations of a better anti-virus?

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Anti Spyware
combofix.exe

Please install, and update Ewido anti-spyware

• Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  
• After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  
• Please select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  
• Under "Reports"
• Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
• Deselect "Only if threats were found"
• Close Ewido. Do not run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

• In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.
  
• Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  
• Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).
  
• Please ensure you post that log in your reply.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, and under the heading of Applications uncheck Ewido Anti-malware log then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (3 logs in total please).

Hello again Bill

We are making progress, however I note that Combofix is telling me that you have some start up programmes disabled. I don't like doing half jobs, I prefer to get rid of malware and not just disable it. So this round we can do some deletions, update Java, which is an exploit, fix the start up problem and I'll take another look.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
• Select Delete on Reboot
• then Click on the All Files button.
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  
• Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Please uninstall Limewire as P2P programmes are a good source of malware.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
• It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
  Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
• If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
• After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
• Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
• There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
  Downloaded Applications
  Other Files
• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Run MSCONFIG and enable everything in the startup area. To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK

Under the "General" Tab

Ensure "Normal Startup-load all device drivers and services" is checked.

Click Apply->OK->Follow the prompts to Restart

Please post a fresh HJT log from normal mode and I'll have a go at the disabled malware hidden away.

This should be the last fix with luck.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
• Select Delete on Reboot
• then Click on the All Files button.
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\uhvjsul.dll

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  
• Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look. How's the PC running now?

Alrighty.....I did the stuff that you said. When I ran the Killbox program to get rid of the process, I got the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt and then had to manually restart. I am posting a new HJT log.

I was wondering if you could tell me all of the stuff you look at on these logs to see whats going on with my system. Also, how do you know which programs to use for which malware/adware. I just want to get some more information on how to do this so I can be more prepared to deal with this in the future. Plus, my wife's computer is acting up a little, and I want to see if I can try and tackle it on my own.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

MVPS Hosts file This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
WINDOWS DEFENDER - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programme for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.
