Annoying pop-ups... [RESOLVED]

i ran ewido, AVG, and ad-aware. Both the ewido and AVG did not really come up with anything. The ad-aware keeps coming up with Purity-Scan, which i think the cause is. But it wont get rid of it permanently. Using some prior knowledge i've fixed some suspicious stuff using hijackthis. Yet I do not know as much as you all do. Ummm... the pop-ups only seem to come up when i have a browser open. Any help is much appreciated...

A. Please disable Ewido Security Suite (EwidoGuard)

1. Launch Ewido
2. In the main window, click "Realtime protection" (in green indicating "Active") to change to inactive.

B. 1. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK.

2. Then copy and paste the content of the following codebox into Notepad:

sc stop WmcCds
sc delete WmcCds
sc stop WmcCdsLs
sc delete WmcCdsLs
del delete.bat

3. Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes.

4. Double click delete.bat.

C. A. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

Save it to your desktop.

D. Please RUN HijackThis.

. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside the following item:

i did everything you said as much as possible. the one exception was that i could not find the following in the hijackthis log:

it may because i manually deleted a suspicious file off of my hard drive that had a file called purity scan on it?
and my google toolbar has been killed after numerous attempts of changing the default search engine. the toolbar has just disappeared, although it is still installed. Also i can still google stuff from my addressbar...
o and tell me when i can reactivate the ewido guard. thanks....

1. This is very important. Please disable Ewido Anti-Spyware by opening the program and on the Status page - beside "Resident Shield" click on "change status" so that it says "inactive" for it may interfere with our HJT fix.

Remember to reactivate this feature when all our work is finished.

2. A. We will be using Killbox again. If you have deleted the tool, please download it again and save it to your desktop.

B. Please RUN HijackThis.

. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside the following item:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4F64AB39-69D9-6255-A4AB-6943B364F79C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\qbavprwb.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {73364D99-1240-4dff-B11A-67E448373048} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipv6mons.dll (file missing)

Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

C. Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select
- "Delete on Reboot
- Then click on the "All Files" button.
Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

A. You need to update the version of Java that is currently on your system

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 from HERE
- Scroll down to where it says "Windows Offline Installation"
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
Once the program has finished downloading:
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
- Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
- Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
- There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
  Downloaded Applications
  Other Files
Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

B. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (Use Internet Explorer as your Browser)

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE YO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Next Click on Free Virus Scanner, then Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Standard
- Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information into your next post.

C. Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Please DELETE Malicious Items from the Ewido v4 Quarantine

A. Open Ewido by double clicking its icon located in the System Tray down by the clock.

B. Click on "Infections" on the Ewido Toolbar, then select the "Quarantine Tab"

C. Choose "Select All" at the bottom of the Ewido window, then click on the "Remove Finally" button and EXIT the program.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
Left click on "System Restore Tab"
Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
Left click on "Apply"

Reboot your System

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
