Hi All,

I've been using/building and repairing my computers since the mighty pent 200mmx but I have finally encoutered a problem that I can not resolve... my ultimate solution will be a HDD reformat... but I really don't want to spend 20+ hours rebuilding my software.

Here is the problem:

I am able to use google in Firefox but in Explorer google and yahoo are completely jacked... I'm not sure how the trojan or which one got on the system (several people use it).

Also Norton Systemworks no longer starts and my xp startup time is very long... also my HDD seems to be constantly accessing.

So far I have removed/reinstalled Sytem works removed/reinstalled latest and updated Adaware; removed/reinstalled latest and updated Spybot seek and destroy; removed/reinstalled latest and updated Spyware blaster... I have run ewido in safe mode and run adaware, spybot search and destroy.... nothing appears in the scans...

But I am still having a hijack in my explorer browser and Systemworks is not functioning properly (can only access it through firefox web browser tool bar)

Here is a copy of my Hijackthis report.

Hi Muzzlehead and Welcome to GeekstoGo!

Please ensure that Ewido is current on its updates.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe
  • Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer,
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • Once the desktop loads-> report.txt should be generated

Open HijackThis-> Click "Do a System Scan Only" and put a check by these but DO NOT hit the Fix Checked button yet

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

O11 - Options group: [INTERNATIONAL] International*

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B1F89C28-8979-4AB8-92F0-B064C500FA3E}: NameServer = 85.255.114.197

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{DCE9022E-0DDC-4DB5-9F30-49BE55DA47E7}: NameServer = 85.255.114.197

    O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.114.197 85.255.112.159

    O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{5B676E2E-8554-40B3-B590-E35A96AC3DDF}: NameServer = 85.255.114.197

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: msldr32 - msldr32.dll (file missing)

Now Make sure ALL WINDOWS and BROWSERS are CLOSED and hit the Fix Checked Button

  • Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close out Ewido Anti-Spyware.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess.

Click Start, and then click Search.
Click All files and folders.
In the "All or part of the file name" box, type:

rasphone.pbk

Verify that "Look in" is set to "Local Hard Drives" or to (C:).
Click "More advanced options."
Check "Search system folders."
Check "Search subfolders."
Click Search.
Click Find Now or Search Now.

If you find rasphone.pbk file, right-click the file, and then click "Open With."
Deselect the "Always use this program to open this program" check box.
Scroll through the list of programs and double-click Notepad.
When the file opens, delete the entries below:

IpDnsAddress = 85.255.114.197
IpDns2Address = 85.255.112.159
IpNameAssign = 2

Restart the computer back into Normal Mode.

Now open the Control Panel-> In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable one some systems.

Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Please have the PC Scanned here:
Panda Active Scan

You will need to be using Internet Explorer for the Scan to work

Save the Report it generates

Post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the reports from Ewido and Panda along with report.txt from Fix WareOut.

All looks good to me! :whistling:

Clean out the Norton Quarantine folder.

Somthings to think about that may assist you in the future.

Now we need to reset System Restore and Clear out all the old infected restore points.
  • Click Start
  • Right-Click "My Computer" and Select Properties.
  • Click on the "System Restore" tab.
  • Place a checkmark in the box for "Turn off System Restore" and Click "Apply."
  • Restart the Computer.
  • Return to System Restore and Uncheck the box for "Turn off System Restore" and Click "Apply."
  • A fresh Restore Point will be created.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office Updates

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site frequently. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any application of it, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed.

If you have trouble with Windows Update, you still can get all the Critical Updates, Security Fixes and Service Packs. Below are a few links to bookmark.

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.
