standby dimmed out and can't be enabled

Hi All! I am new to this forum and have similar problems with standby mode in XP as TRannie did http://www.geekstogo...howtopic=101036
Did T ever resolve problem?
Unlike T, I CAN enable hibernate but not standby..it has simply vanished!
A friend tinkered with my laptop and concluded by saying that standby was no longer in the BIOS (??).
It was there one day and gone the next..I'm confused and this is causing me annoyance as I used standby alot.
Can you help me get it back please?
