Hello,

I am grateful to have found your site. I have no idea what is going on with my computer! Have Windows 98 and tried to follow the instructions on your home page. I was able to download and run CWSHREDDER and TrojanHunter - nothing was found. I am not able to download any other links - I try, buy nothing happens. When I first start up IE, I get the following message "MSNMIG - this program has performed an illiegal operation and will be shut down" - I close it and IE comes up. However, whenever I try to change pages, I get "An error has occurred in the script on this page" all kinds of errors pop up....Line 55, char 3, error - syntax error. Line 356, char 4, syntax error. Line 67, char 1, syntax error. I am lost and this is the third computer we are having problems with. Also tried downloading Mozilla, but got a "unable to creat a certificate chain from the signing certificate to a root. Also, can not open email from hotmail at all. Please help!

Which version of Windows 98 is it? The early version throws up all kinds of wierd and wonderful errors for many programs.

To find out, right-click on My Computer and go to Properties. It tells you there whether it's Win98 Gold or Win98 Second Edition.

Yes, its Windows 98 Gold. The malware programs and Mozilla unfortunately don't run on this version of Windows 98. Microsoft discontinued support for this version of Windows 98 less than a year after it came out as it was basically no better than Windows 95.

Out of luck I'm afraid. Sorry.

Ok, when you cannot cure you can at least reinstall but before you jump to putting in the Windows cd and fresh reinstalling the system there are three things I would like you to do;

- most malware will be removed if you follow the steps in the link given here; however, in the rare case that the malware beats the steps mentioned, then the link goes on to tell what to do after that.

- make sure you have all you drivers because finding drivers for windows 98 is not always possible.
- backup all you data, which on a windows 98 machine is never a great amount but since USB keys are out, not simple, hopefully you have some other way then.
- wait a bit longer in case someone has a better idea

Do you have a windows98 cd, or a restore disk, or something else. I would wait a bit longer because I am very weak on most things but especially windows98.
