I seem to be having tons of problems on my computer. I cannot use the Windows Explorer at all without freeze up and "Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger" error message. Also my Task Manger is acting wierd ... it has no menu bar anymore and no tabs for processes etc ... I have followed all of the initial directions (run Adaware, CWShredder, etc) and was wondering if anyone could help get my computer back on iits proverbial feet ... i have 1GB of installed memory and cannot even play Neverwinter Nights anymore without constant freezing up and lag whereas i could before. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi jcole42,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later. Do not use any of them until instructed to do do.
Download cwsserviceremove.zip and unzip it to your desktop

1. Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

2. Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

3. Then, Download Ad-aware Second Edition here and install it. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.

Open adaware and Click the "Check for updates now" line on the main screen. CLick the "Connect" button on the webupdate screen.

If an update is available download it and install it. Click the "Finish" button to go back to the main screen.

Click on the "Settings" button (gear symbol in the upper right corner of the main status screen) in the quick launch toolbar to open the General settings screen. Check the "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal" setting and then click "Proceed" to save your changes

Click the "Scan now" button in the main menu on the left side of the main status screen or use the "Start" button in lower right corner. This will open the Preparing System Scan screen. Please deselect "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat. Then select "Use custom scanning options" and click "CUstomize". This will open the "Scan Settings Page. Make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan within archives
Scan active processes
Scan Registry
Deep-scan Registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
Scan my Hosts File

Then click on the "Tweak" Button to open up the tweak settings.

Open up the Scanning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Make sure the following is unchecked with a "red" X:

Unload recognized processes & modules during scan.

Open up the Cleaning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Always try to unload modules before deletion
During Removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.

Click the "Proceed" button to save settings.

Don't scan yet. We will do it in safe mode.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called 11F#`I. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

While in safe mode, double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Then Open cwshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

C:\WINDOWS\appus.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appfs32.exe

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\riwig.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipdd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\appus.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appfs32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mfcsa.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\csuptfn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs5.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\12.tmp.exe 0 10001
C:\DOCUME~1\USER\LOCALS~1\Temp\3.tmp.exe 1 10001
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vernn16.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kvern16.dll
hnehela2.exe

And this folder:

C:\Program Files\webHancer

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\riwig.dll/sp.html#44768

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Now navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply.

Scan with Adaware by opening it and clicking the "Next" button to start the scan.

When the scan is completed the Performing System Scan screen will change name to "Scan Complete".

Click the "Next" button to get to the Scanning Results screens where more information about the objects detected during the scan is available.

Click the Critical Objects Tab. In general all of the items listed will be bad. Be carefull with the Hosts file entries. Malware uses the hosts file to redirect you websites. However you can use the hosts file as a way to prevent malware. If the object has 127.0.0.1 in it, it should most likely not be deleted as it is protecting against unwanted sites. For more information on how to use a host file to protect yourself read here. So in short, you may or may not want to fix the hosts file entries.

To fix all the bad critical objects do the following:

Right click on one of them to open up the selection screen. Click the "Select All" button to select all entries. In general all should be selected with the exception of the good hosts file entries.

When all are selected Click "Next" and then "OK" in the pop-up window to confirm the removal.

Now reboot, and run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log.
Regards,

Trevuren

I tried to follow your directions but I cannot use my computer or windows explorer or any function that brings up a windows "window" so to speak ... i had to extract aboutbuster to my desktop with Netscape Download Manager ... i am stuck where i am supposed to "ensure hidden files are folders are set to show" because when i click on My Computer i get the DrWatson Postmortem Debugger error or nothing happens, the desktop blanks out and then returns but the My Computer does not open ... any work around? or a different order i can do things in that fix this problem so i can reveal hidden files? thanks in advance for your assitance

Hi jcole42,

Try this:

*Please download
xphidden.zip to your desktop.
*Double click on the XPHidden.zip to open the file
*then double click on xphidden.reg to add the information to your registry.
*This will cause all super-hidden files and protected system files to be visible.

sorry work has kept me so busy ... i did as you suggested to show hidden files (downloaded xphidden.zip) but now i am at the point that says to run "services.msc" and find 11F#`I ... there is no service running called 11F#`I ... is this a misprint or accidentallly garbled? am i really looking for "11F#`I" or something else?

thank you in advance for your assistance,

ok under services workstation netlogon the service name is 11F#`I ; while the display name is workstation net logon ... should i continue with the instructions from that point?

on a side note would this bug that i have cause all of this problem opening windows like recycle bin, windows explorer or anything else that relies on a "window" coming up ... and is it also causing my task manger to only show the front programs tab and no other tabs or drop down menu bar?

thanks again for all of your help ... sorry about the delay ... had a bit of electrical failure at my apartment the last two days ...

Hi jcole42,

That's the right name. Well done, continue as per direction given.

As to your second question, the answer is YES and more. The symptoms vary from victim to victim going from a total inability to use the system to minor disruptions and every combo in between.

Here are the two log files ... i was not able to do the following step:

"Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present
C:\WINDOWS\appus.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appfs32.exe"

because my task manager had no process tab available.

also i did check and "fix" the following items (3 times) in hijackthis but they continued to show up on each new scan:

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149

ok ... i am excited to know the next steps to clean my computer for good ... thanks again ...

Hi jcole42,

1. Please download Winhelp2002's Deldomains.inf to your desktop.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install

2. With all windows closed, run HJT, SCAN and Post the log into this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi jcole42, the bad news is no I don't have a suggestion for your problems but I suggest you consult with the good people over at PCPitstop who may be able to help you.

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and
C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

6. You may find that you have to repeat the steps a couple of times.

7.Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
