some Info:
Processor: GenuineIntel Family 15 Model 2 2.5 GHz Stepping 7
Bios: A M I - 11000321 BIOS Date: 11/21/03 12:16:48 Ver: 08.00.09 BIOS Date: 11/21/0
Memory: 1535 MB
Hard Disk: 2 SATA 80Gb using Raid1
Windows XP: 5.1 (Build 2600)
Firefox Browser but IE still installed.

Hy, I think I'll need some help on this one!

explorer.exe started using up around 99% of my CPU when I started poking arround.
I have just formated my computer and it took me some time to get SP2 installed.
I'm using Firefox browser so I wondered a bit when occasionally IE would open to dissplay a virus warning message from "http://amaena.com/se...urityworm5/pt". I did not relate the two problems and didn't really credit the IE popUp problem with much importance as my main concern was my CPU usage problem.
I searched the internet and tryed several things. I should warn you that i'm not really good around computers and most of it baffles me.
I usually use Norton AV, and since I reserched my problem I'm now Using:
aSquared, HijackThis, Look2Me, RootkitRevealer and SpyBot.

I restarted in Safemode and run the lot. After Using Look2Me the sistem workes visibaly better, but just now the Explorer problem made another entrance with the amaena.com page.

Eventually I found this Forum and I think it's great, just the thing I need right now.

My first and only Look2Me Logfile:

Look2Me-Destroyer V1.0.12

Scanning for infected files.....
Scan started at 27-09-2006 20:35:10

Attempting to delete infected files...

Making registry repairs.

Restoring Windows certificates.

Replaced hosts file with default windows hosts file

Restoring SeDebugPrivilege for Administrators - Succeeded

This is my HijackLog file:

I went through the "You must read this before posting - guide" and found this.
Whenever I use Ad-aware scan, some time into the scan I get a Blue screen saying: "Fatal System Error, The Windows logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with (A bunch of zeros) System shut down"

I have not yet used the CWShreder. for some reason, when I press F8 at startUp, instead of enabeling me to chose save Mode, I get prompted as to which bootdrive I prefere. It must be some strange Bios config thing...

To start in SaveMode I edit the Boot.ini file (using msconfig) and check the /safeboot box.

Conclusion
I do hope you'll be able to help me. I mistakingly posted this message first in the WindowsXP Forum. That was before understanding how this should work. I'm sorry for any inconveniance. Also I beg to be excused for my rather poor spelling, but English is not my first language.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Marc and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

Your English is fine, much better than my Portuguese. I will be visiting Lagos in 4 weeks time to hopefully play some golf, if I am well enough.

It was a good call of yours to rename hijackthis (where did you learn that skill?), as it revealed your malware problem. You have a ConHook infection, which normally downloads and installs the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo) infection. Let’s see what we can do.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log, from normal mode, in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If Vundofix does not find and delete the files, please try running it bit differently:
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files?
  • Copy & paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes:
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\jkkji.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\ijkkj.*
  • Click Add Files and click Close Window.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log, from normal mode.

Thank you for your fast reply, as I'm not at home right now I will only be able to post a reply in about 8Hours time.

The renaming HyjackThis.exe I actually got from you. I read around this forum a bit and decided to try it out. I knew something was wrong, but the log file came back clean. (I check the log file here: http://www.hijackthis.de/). so the the malware must be hiding from HyjackThis.

In the meantime I'll try to learn more about the ConHook infection.

I will be visiting Lagos in 4 weeks time to hopefully play some golf, if I am well enough.

The algarve is very nice, specially if you like golf. I hope you'll be fine to enjoy some nice golf and good food.

Boa noite Marc

The logs look good, but we have some tidying to do.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B7672BAF-E9A3-49B6-86B2-C81719A18A4C} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CA481552-6C6E-4624-9908-6FA5885FC171} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D806F530-43B1-446A-A920-44015F067F4E} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jkkji.dll (file missing)
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winccf32 - winccf32.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another (final?) look.

How is the PC running now?

Hy Phil!

The Computer is running Fine. I did what you told me and in adition ran ad-aware and Norton. Both found some items and had no problem in eliminating them. And Ad-aware did not provoke the blue screen any more. The computer is running fast and smoth. I am glad!

I thank you very much and would like you to send me your international IBAN Bank code, the name of the owner of the account and your SWIFT code so that I might pay you a little something as a token of my gratitude.

I hope you'll feel fine enough to catch some sun and Golf in the Algarve. If not golf, there is always the food and the sun which you can enjoy sitting down.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :whistling: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

MVPS Hosts file This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
WINDOWS DEFENDER - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programme for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

It just remains for me to wish you happy safe surfing; I hope you found my advice helpful.

I have sent you some details in a Personal Message.
