It's good to hear that. Thank you so much.
Btw, may I know what are the issues?

phat_ox,

Well, I see one file left that is related to the original major infection you had: C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\SVOHOST.exe We're going to use combofix on that and to make sure there's nothing else lurking. The other 2 files I see that are bad are:

C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinUpdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\alchem.exe

These may have been the source of some of the ongoing popups you've had as well.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\WindUpdates
    C:\WINDOWS\alchem.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

This is a new version of combofix that I'd like you to download. First delete the existing copy of combofix.

Combofix

Doubleclick combofix and follow the prompts to run it. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log & a fresh HJT log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,

sari

I tried to do the killbox step but after i copy the file path to the clipboard, I clicked the paste from clipboard and nothing came up. I pasted the file path into the box and i get this: pending file name operations registry data have been remove by external process.

phat_ox,

Go ahead and run the newer Combofix, and then we'll try to find those files in safe mode and see if we can delete them after you've done that.

phat_ox,

I'm sorry, I had personal things come up. I'm reviewing this again - it looks better, but I think there's still some cleaning up to do.

phat_ox,

Please go to Start > Run and type msconfig. Under the General tab, please make sure Normal Startup is selected. Under the Startup tab, please make sure everything in there is checked. Click OK, and then reboot your system. Post a new hijackthis log.

Thanks,

phat_ox,

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindUpdates] C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinUpdt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMam] C:\WINDOWS\system32\SVOHOST.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [alchem] C:\WINDOWS\alchem.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Show Hidden Files
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\WindUpdates

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SVOHOST.exe
C:\WINDOWS\alchem.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\hdusb.sys__

After that, Reboot.

Post a new hijackthis log, and let's see how things are.

Thanks,

phat_ox,

That's very good news. I'm glad we were able to get you cleaned up (finally!).

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future. I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thanks for visiting Geeks to Go!
