Hello again. My wife's computer seems to be running pretty slow. Earlier in the week, AVG quarentined several files that were infected with what was identified as Worm/Generic and Java/ByteVerify. I went through all of the listed steps to rid malware, but the computer still seems slow.
If someone gets a chance, could you please take a look at her HJT log.

Hello Greg and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

You have a mixture of malware and Trojans. Let’s see what we can do.

Please disable Ewido Guard from running as it will hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the orange icon in the taskbar (near the clock) and uncheck Resident Shield. The icon will change to a grey colour.

Please disable BigFix for the same reason. I am unfamiliar with the programme so I cannot offer a tutorial.

Please disable Trojan Hunter. Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red. Right click it and select settings. Uncheck Load at startup and Enabled

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those three programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it as it may deprive you of internet access. Let’s deal with that first.

Please download LSPfix and save it to the Desktop and unzip it.

Run LSPfix and place a checkmark or tick against the I know what I am doing checkbox.

Highlight every instance of the following names and move them from the Keep to the Remove panel. Be sure to move nothing other than the files listed below!

aklsp.dll

When done, click on Finish to exit the programme; do not use the X in the top right-hand corner as nothing will happen!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
CWShredder
cwsserviceemove.reg file
combofix.exe

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VBouncer] C:\PROGRA~1\VBouncer\VirtualBouncer.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IncrediMail] C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\bin\IncMail.exe /c
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Add animation to IncrediMail Style Box - C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\bin\resources\WebMenuImg.htm
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.emachines.com
O16 - DPF: {3EB4F9EA-51A6-48DA-846A-0D69DCBA39EF} (DownloadManager Control) - http://download.akam...loadManager.cab
O16 - DPF: {640B39C1-D713-464F-92C3-75BD972B95EE} - http://www.sidestep....42037/sb02a.cab
O16 - DPF: {E3E02F12-2ADB-478C-8742-5F0819F9F0F4} (Quantum Streaming IE VersionManager Class) - http://qmedia.xlonte...2ie06041001.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

VirtualBouncer
IncrediMail

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\PROGRA~1\VBouncer\
C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select Delete on Reboot
  • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\bin\IMApp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
C:\PROGRA~1\VBouncer\VirtualBouncer.exe
C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\bin\IncMail.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\bin\resources\WebMenuImg.htm
c:\windows\system32\aklsp.dll
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, and under the heading of Applications uncheck Ewido Anti-malware log then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look over this.
Is Incredimail a bad thing? My wife has been using that as her email program for about a year. I am afraid to delete it. If I lose her emails, I am a dead man. Also, virtualbouncer was not on the list.

If Incredimail is a source of these problems, I will find another program for her to use.

Whenever I see Incredimail and tell a member that in my opinion it has to go, I get a great reluctance from the member. At the end of the day, it is not my PC, you are free to do anything you want with it, but I am a malware remover and if you'd like to read their Privacy Policy, you'll see why it is a source of malware and should be deleted from every PC in the world.

If I don't get a reply, should I send a floral tribute?

Phil,
Don't send the floral tribute just yet. I have received great information here before, and I acknowledge that you know MUCH more about this than I do. I am in the process of backing up email files from IncrediMail and sending them to Outlook Express. This is very time comsuming for me. Once completed, I will complete your instructions and post my progress.
Thanks for your help so far.

Well, after several hours of work, I managed to get rid of IncrediMail.

I continued through the remainder of the steps the best that I could.

I had trouble getiing Killbox to "Paste from Clipboard". I pasted the paths in one at a time and hit delete. When I was finished, it gave me a message about something had been removed by an external process. (I think that was what it said)

My Combofix log is:

1:45 PM 10/1/2006Molly - 06-10-01 13:37:43.04 Service Pack 2
ComboFix 06.09.27 - Running from: "C:\Documents and Settings\Molly\Desktop"

It seems to be running a little faster. Before, when you would double-click on a program, it would take 20 seconds to open. The computer always seemed to be busy with many other tasks. I'll have to let her be the judge though.
Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :whistling: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

MVPS Hosts file This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
WINDOWS DEFENDER - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programme for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

It just remains for me to wish you happy safe surfing; I hope you found my advice helpful.
