Hi folks, this the the third time my computer has been hijacked by what ever the proper term is called. I am self taught but very good with computers but I'm worn out trying to keep up with these devils. The first time it happened they changed my browser homepage did the pop up deal and directed to their homepage, I cured it by safe mode and used spybot as suggested by a friend, it worked. The second was the same thing, but spybot didn't work, this time I used smitfraudfix with safe mode and it was fixed. Now this third time it's antispyware soldier which has attacked my background on desk top etc. From looking at this forum I was able to clean out a few wierd things like BHO with no files, I have also tried to remove some files I know are bad like 04 files but they return. The first problem I have is when I safe mode start my highjackthis program doesn't show anywhere on my computer even though it shows on regular start up, so this confuses me. I also know I have all kinds of nasty things that shouldn't be on my computer I hope someone can help me please. I hope from doing everything ahead of time before posting my hijackthis log I have done everything right so far. I also noticed alot of the files I removed have returned!!!
Thanks in advance
Ed

Hi mwfire308 and Welcome to GeekstoGo!

Remove any old copies of Smitfraud fix and download a recent version, its to the point now where the fix is updated almost daily.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi cretemonstor, ok this was a problem I had before with smitfraud, I open the folder and unzip, extract all files but I don't see the smitfraudfix.cmd file. I do have about 11 files open up:dumphive, GenericRe..,Process, restart, boot etc. I must be unzipping it wrong or something. When I do open what I can it tells me process.exe file missing. Sorry for being a little slow about how to open this program.

Lets try another tool and see what happens.

Download smitRem.exe ©noahdfear, and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1

Restart in Safe Mode

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Restart Normal and post the results of smitfiles.txt

I did get smitfraudfix to work it did it's thing and worked, but I accidently closed the file before copying. I did a hijackthis after and this is what it found now. Also will I have to do a smitfraudfix for every user on the computer in safe mode or just once in my user/admin? Here is hijackthis report, the only file that still bothers me is the ctfmon, is this a bad file because I don't reconize it. Thanks for all the help so far.

Now we are getting somewhere!

Is your desktop back to normal?

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
http://download.blee...Bs/combofix.exe

Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.

Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt

Please post that log in the next reply.

After posting that log,Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the Instruction on the F-Secure page for proper installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Thats fine,it will do that sometimes for reasons unknown to me.

Usually the second scan goes through ok.

Make sure Windows is Showing Hidden Files and Folders.
http://www.bleepingc...al62.html#winxp

Search for and Delete if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jfxyaxsn.exe<-- File

Post the results of the 2nd F-Secure scan and let me know if you found and deleted that file?

Well this looks very good, F-scan did it's job probably the first time, but freezing up didn't show it. I'm going to search for that file and delete if it's there. I will post my results.
