I had tried using ATI and beryl for about a solid week. I finally was able to get Xgl to work in SuSE10.2 and the cube effects were nice. (It took me 3 attempts, 2 of them hosed my xorg.conf file). However, after enabling Xgl i noticed i had no 3d support but i was using my fglrx drivers from ATI. Beryl manager ran at start up but it also crashed back to my KDE window manager. I decided that 3d support and CS were more important to me until Beryl is proven stable with the new ATI drivers. I was not lucky enough to get it to work... I wish you the best of luck.

I used Beryl + Compiz on Ubuntu Dapper on a ATI card in Dell Latitude D610. the eye candy was nice for a little but wasnt worth running fulltime. When I tried to run it on Ubuntu Edgy I got the white screen error.

These links are for ubuntu but could be adapted for suse.
