In my first post in the Hardware forum, I mentioned that my computer has slowed to the point that it is basically an expensive paperweight and that the hard drive LED flickers all the time. Geeks to Go member austin o replied and suggested that I try some additional disk cleaning and malware removal utilities beyond what I had already done, and that if this didn't speed things up, I should post a HijackThis log in the malware forum.

No malware was found in any of the scans (which included Ewido antispyware, Trojanhunter, Spysweeper, and a PandaSoftware online scan) but the computer still just crawls along. And the hard drive LED flickers like crazy. So here's the log:

Hello and welcome to Geeks To Go

I have had a look at your HJT log and it is unremarkable, however, you do seem to have a "Fort Knox" approach to malware scanners; I count 5, they being: Ewido Guard, Spy Sweeper, Win Patrol, Trojan Hunter and AOL AntiSpywarePlugin.

This is very bad practice since all of them are doing similar jobs and running in real-time; they will cause slowness and even conflicts. Please disable 4 of them leaving just one running and hopefully that will help you.

In addition to that, I am going to recommend the following HJT fix, with just one file deletion. This is just to unload your start up folder from the burden of having all of these programmes running at all times, which is totally unnecessary. The change will not harm your PC in any way.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, find and delete this file:

C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0a\AOL.EXE

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Your Java is out of daye and is now an exploit.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Check the anti virus programme is running after the reboot.

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Crustyoldbloke,

Thanks for looking over my log and also for the suggestions. I will implement them as soon as possible and let you know the results...probably later this week, as I travel a lot with my job and am not home much.

Crustyoldbloke,

Thanks for the terrific suggestions. Things are MUCH improved. The hard drive still purrs a lot, but programs load very quickly now, and startup/shutdown is a breeze.

With appreciation,

Hard drive chatter can be down to the make. I always use Seagate.

You are very welcome to the help.

I will leave this thread open for a few days in case of misfortune.
