Some malware has the ability to hide when interrogated by hijackthis; I believe this to be true in your case. Please right click on hijackthis.exe and rename it to crusty.exe Then please rescan your PC and submit the fresh HJT log.

This is the location of the file now: C:\DOCUME~1\Eric\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX02.343\HijackThis.exe

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then Program Files.

In the menu bar, go to File>New>Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can right-click on and rename to HJT or HijackThis.

Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Cut ‘n’ Paste your HijackThis.exe (now crusty.exe) into it.

Hello again Eric

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

Renaming was a good call see the 02 and 020 entries; you have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans including a ConHook infection. Let’s see what we can do in getting rid of it and then I’ll clear up the rest.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log, from normal mode, in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If Vundofix does not find and delete the files, please try running it bit differently:

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
• When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
• Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files?
• Copy & paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes:
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\urssr.dll
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\rssru.*
• Click Add Files and click Close Window.
• Click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log, from normal mode.

Hello again Eric

The logs looks good - you were really badly infected. This fix will be a little like taking a hammer to crack a walnut, but I want to do it this way due to the heavy infection of ConHook and Vundo. This should clear up the rest of the malware but also give me an insight into what lies within the hidden parts of your PC.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
AVG AntiSpyware
combofix.exe

Please install, and update AVG Anti Spyware

• Load AVGas and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  
• After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  
• Please select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  
• Under "Reports"
• Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
• Deselect "Only if threats were found"
• Close AVGas. Do not run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Safe Mode

• In Safe Mode, load AVGas and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.
  
• AVGas will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVGas will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  
• Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).
  
• Please ensure you post that log in your reply.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into normal

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
• Select Delete on Reboot
• then Click on the All Files button.
• Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jilbffov.dll

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  
• Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, and under the heading of Applications uncheck AVGas Anti-malware log then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (3 logs in total please).

Hello again Eric

Your HJT log is unchanged from the last one I saw prior to the last fix. I am going to guess that AVG antispyware was running at the time and reversed the changes made.

Please disable AVGas Guard from running as it will hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the multicoloured icon with an S, in the taskbar (near the clock) and uncheck Resident Shield. The icon will change to a grey colour.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Now that the HijackThis log for the main account is clean, you have a choice to make.

You can either post into this thread a fresh HJT log for each of the other accounts, from normal mode and I will analyse them and give you instruction necessary for any fix. Or you can go to User Accounts in the Control Panel and delete all the accounts other than the one I have been working on.

Windows by default will create a folder for each account and place it on the desktop with all the files and documents relative to that account in it, so nothing is lost.

If you then wish to have multiple accounts again, just reboot normally and create the account again from User Accounts (takes 5 minutes).

|Let me know what you decide as I have yet to give you final clean up instructions.

I deleted one account (donna) but i cannot delete my account because i have a few programs installed only on my account and if i delete it i will lose them, but the only accounts i have now are Eric and Admin but for some reason i cannot delete the admin account it doesnt even show up as an account.

If you go to User Accounts in the Control Panel, just ensure that your normal account has admin status as opposed to limited account status. The Administrator account is normally only visible in safe mode and is not normally used, so do not attempt to delete your own account.

Here are your final instructions.

Congratulations! your system is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

MVPS Hosts file This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
WINDOWS DEFENDER - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programme for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.
